That was the year I did Edinburgh - St Andrews and did lots of practice miles! Last year my total mileage was 1380, and this year I'm only at 1050. But I was hardly on the bike at all mid-December - March owing to the weather, and then for various reasons it was much easier to use the bus this September and October. Next time I take a student on placement I'll insist they have a bike.

The way I eat, if it weren't for cycling I'd balloon right back up to the 16.5 stones I was 2 years ago. It's been a long, slow and sometimes painful process (such as today, when the car park barrier at work malfunctioned and came down on top of my head - yay for helmets!) but I now have a way to counter my voracious appetite have found something I love doing and have also misplaced 5 stones of body butter.

My experience was one of trying (and failing) over the long term to control calories in so ended up deciding to "do something" about it when I squatted down to help my dad lift a large flowerpot and burst the ar*e seam on my suit trousers by controlling the calories out.
