"I am seriously impressed that you walked up tenement stairs 12 hours after giving birth and are thinking about cycling already!"

    Yes.

Details obviously vary between individuals - and actual births - but generally fitness helps and obviously regular exercise (e.g. cycling to work!) helps a lot.

I presume health professionals have given up tutting about the idea of cycling after about 3 months(?)

Thanks everyone! Must admit that the stairs were the main thing I was worried about, but I just took'em slow.

Steveo -- I didn't want to stay in, and both RIE and St John's were full, so I talked my way out same day. It helped that they didn't have a bed for me to go to, and baby had a quick recovery despite traumatic delivery. (Personally, I think it takes more guts to survive 3 days in hospital than to go home! Congrats to you and yours too!!).

it does take guts to survive RIE - after a C-section (so the stay was unavoidable) my wife got food poisoning in there...

In Fife, according to a colleague. Thought I heard another saying there was some round Dunbar way. None visible on any cars on my way in, though.

Icy blast hits roads and schools in east of Scotland

Most affected are Grampian and the Borders, with predictions that snow will spread to the rest of the country by the weekend.

    Gail McGrane
    BBC Senior Forecaster

After a brief respite this afternoon hazardous conditions will return to the north overnight, with ice quickly forming and snow showers intensifying. These showers will become frequent, prolonged and heavy at times, adding to existing falls of snow.

In contrast, southern and central Scotland will initially be dry, clear and frosty, with temperatures as low as -6C, but a few snow flurries will appear by morning.

    Probably wise

Did we do 'tyres for snow' last winter?

I think knobolies were fine on the soft stuff but for the ice, did any one bother with studded tyres.

Why do you have any mountains to climb?
(Sorry I channeled someone else's sarcasm that was directed at me earlier on this thread (or somewhere else)

Tempted by the studded ones if we have snow for months on end - wonder if they would deal with the ice rink that was the Roseburn path...

"Tempted by the studded ones if we have snow for months on end"

Yes there seems to be a reasonable amount of choice these days. Of course snow tends not to hang around in Edinburgh much.

And of course the council will be putting salt down on cycle paths this year...

Yeah thinking about trying some studs - especially if the canal freezes again!

Once when there was a gritters' strike and the roads were 'impassable' I got around on a bike with cycle speedway tyres. Not perfect on ice.

I can verify that plenty of gritting and salting has been done out in Souf Embra. All over the pavement up the Old Dalkeith Road this morning, and coming home all the salt spread around the RIE site had worked it's way into the cycle lane and up the Old Dalkeith Road into the cycle lane, so we should be okay...

There was what might charitably be referred to as an extremely thin layer of frost on the most exposed bit of Regent Road this morning. What will be immense fun later on (if it re-freezes) is what looked to be some sort of water-leak puddle (or possibly someone helpfully hosing some of the market-generated detritus off the pavement) on Princes Street in front of the gallery, to add to the tram-rail-based fun already able to be experienced in that area.

Ride report I've heard on the Schwalbe Studders is 'like riding on velcro'

Chilly, but no ice doon by the watter this morning, rode through my first snow though, think it had fallen off someone's landrover as they turned into work :)

    Congrats to the baby bearers!

Snow at home today but okay on roads once out of our lane.

Lots of beeps from lorry on A7 though - probably thought that I should cycle on the snowy bit of the road. Will have to get the turbo out of the attic again (along with the Christmas tree).
