Urgent - Leith St Statutory Order Re-advertisement - Removal of bus lanes

    Please be advised that the City of Edinburgh Council has given notice that access to/from Calton Road to/from Leith Street will be prohibited to traffic from 06:00 on Wednesday 20th December 2017 until further notice, in order to facilitate works associated with the development of Edinburgh St James.

    Pedestrian, emergency vehicle and cycle access will be maintained at all times. Access to Greenside Row and Q-Park from Leith Street will also be maintained, however exit from Greenside Row to Leith Street will be via right turn only.

    My objection is in, taking account of reasons given in both Spokes' and Living Streets' objections, plus a few twists of my own.

    Still time to object: deadline today!

    Anybody having problems with the latest configuration at the top of Leith Street? Involves dismount, pavement and turning at pedestrian signalised crossing. Photos

    Spokes discussed some improvements and has been asked to reconsider objection.

    Yes McD the new configuration is rubbish and causes a lot of unnecessary conflict along a narrow section of pavement. Not really sure why.

    @McD The current stupid bit at the top is likely to finally send me back round to York Place/North St David Street, especially now that the tabard-people have started to get bored and stop paying attention even when huge lorries are playing games of look-no-banksman.
    I repeatedly tried to upload a video of it yesterday but it failed. I'll try again today...

    From the Sustrans Picardy Place thread:

    Layout for cycling has changed (got less coherent) but the new cycle path is now visible from the road, though not 'open'. (Pedestrians using it right now.)

    That "dropped kerb" at the approach to Greenside Row is where Northbound (non Calton Road) cyclists are expected to leave the cycleway. It leads into an ASZ.
    Calton Road cyclists will continue via the shared space area on either side of Greenside Row to rejoin the segregated cycleway to Calton Road. Those that have stayed on as far as Calton Road will see another "dropped kerb" on the South side of the junction, where they can join the carriageway.
    Northbound cyclists will use the carriageway on Leith Street and join the cycleways at Picardy Place (outside John Lewis)
    Spokes will be confirming that it's objections remain despite these minor improvements.

    I can imagine the developers reckon the chances of this going to a hearing are remote. Thus only minor changes may be required, if any, to address objectors' concerns. Maybe we'll get the bus lanes back, but I don't hold out much hope for further "improvement" of the designs unless the developers are feeling generous...

    I think CEC will reopen the road under a TTRO (temporary road regulation order) until the permanent TRO & RSO can be approved. TTRO doesn't require consultation and no way for public to object. Can last up to 2 years.

    Indeed, see the temporary Abbeyhill gyratory for an example of a TTRO in action.

    Let's face it, there are some very determined people behind these plans, some of whom have "learned lessons" from the tram project in how to push things through in the teeth of opposition and controversy. They know that most of the legal position is in their favour, and they have just gone ahead and changed the layout, making it a fait accompli. They can now sit tight and weather the opposition, addressing concerns in a piecemeal and very partial fashion.

    I'll be very surprised if anything much changes from what has been built.

    I keep passing this new infrastructure every morning. And after a few passes I'm still at a loss as to how anyone is meant to use it.

    1) The access ports (or exit ports) are tiny and at right angles.
    2) The crossing is completely shared with pedestrians.
    3) It's actually quite narrow in general. The bike path is meant to be two way but doesn't look wide enough for that. And the footpath seems split down the middle (for floating but stop I guess).
    4) Due to the above and the level to footpath nature of the path I just think there will be a huge conflict with pedestrians forcing most cyclists to ignore it. (Which is what happens on Leith Walk).

    I hate to be negative as it's good it's getting built. But built so poorly no one will use it so they can just scrap it at a later date blaming disuse and under use rather than poor design.

    (Sorry, its a grumpy day apparently.)

    This 'cycle infrastructure' may well merit an intervention from the Bollard (and Chicane) Protection Authority.

    What's Leith Street like at the moment? Considering going that ay with a trailer tomorrow, and would like to avoid faffing around at barriers.

    Funny you should ask, was there today.

    But, only went to/from Calton Road.

    No access from there to northbound cycle lane.

    Signs ‘inviting’ cyclists to dismount then implying that new cycle paths don’t exist/aren’t for people on bikes (yet).

    Heading uphill towards Princes Street not clear if there is through cycle route.

    That may not help you...

    i'm going between North Bridge and Broughton Street regularly. there is a separate cycle route through, with a set of (very very very long) lights in the middle. it does change a bit, depending on where they're working.

    however, the south bit of the route after the lights is quite narrow, only just wide enough to meet another cycle, so how wide is your trailer?

    Is it just narrow, or is there a chicane as well? Trailer isn't much wider than my handlebars, so narrow is fine, but turning circle is large.

    The narrowness varies weekly, but is probably the narrowest it's been for a while just now. At the weekends the tend to do stupid things with the Princes Street end, including occasional chicanery. I'd avoid it, unless you're going to film it to demonstrate its inadequacy.

    Turned out to be fine. Worst bit was actually further north, from Picardy Place to McDonald Road, where the road markings are non existent and I get confused as to where I'm supposed to be.

    Going down the way @frenchy you are laughing. Going up the way you have cyclists bowling along coming towards you at a lick and no bail option down to Calton Aroad as this has been fenced off and has a person in hi viz directing you up to princes st

    i'd forgotten about turning circle, last time i went through there some of the bends were almost 90 degrees, and as said, people coming down at speed! good to hear you got through.

    fewer pedestrians in the lane at the moment, i think because there's a wall of sorts up.

    #LeithStreet - part of the temporary cycleway is due to be closed on Mon 2 July. Apparently it is likely that parts of the section of cycleway shown will be open for parts of the day, as work progresses. Footway remains open (for walking) throughout.
