It's in my diary, and I can actually still make it along. looks like first train is around 05:55 and roughly every 30 minutes...

Some discussion this morning about non participants meeting participants at the Dalriada afterwards. I'm tempted!

I mentioned this when it came out and just mentioned it again: I'm apparently OK to join in, so I'll get my geared bike's knackered-valve tube replaced tomorrow morning and see how it's rolling this week.

Can't remember if I posted it here but I got rear-ended by a Beemer in Newington.

I've straightened the wheel enough to ride round town but I'm not riding it into the hills I'm afraid. Risk of kipoing! too high.

    Next time though. Have fun.

PS I looked for a bugle in the junk shop yesterday bu no joy.

What effect will this have on the intended pace of the remaining group? Am I best taking off the BoBike bracket to save weight, or will I still be fine bringing loads of crap in my pannier? Does the train require in-person seat and bike space reservation, or do you just roll and give the guard a secret handshake?

the group speed will be somewhere in-between pedestrian and leisurely i'd imagine, a pannier or two would not be out of place.

Nothing required for the train, esp at that time of the morning.

Only time I've not been able to get the bike on was @ 1730 on a weekday when the bike space was full of commuters and the guard said "tough luck".

Are we coalescing around the first train around 0600 ? It is awfully early, but really no reason why not. Expect about 5.30-6hrs of riding time, so a 0700 start from Tweedbank, puts us back in Porty for 1500 pint with a stop in Lauder for breakfast after 25k and then Lantern Rouge for tiffin around after 45k (and the stupid hill - Lammer Law).

The earlier the better, as far as maximising the intersection between being-out-of-house and rest-of-family-still-asleep time goes. Also presumably less risk of there not being sufficient space if as many people as possible go on the earliest possible train? I was going to aim for the earliest, anyway.

Looks like I'm in! Happy to go for the earliest train (well, you know what I mean). Hopefully ground should be reasonably dry as the forecast for the week looks okay. I'm happy with a leisurely pace and plenty of cakeage.

Now I'm tempted to ride this on a shonky wheel. My shifters off the Scaffolding Bike (RIP) are so old and worn I can't get into the granny gear no more so it'd cost me my knees but if Morning Cider's going how can I say no?

    What size wheel?
Being in the shed for a few months might have fixed it but selecting the smallest chainring on my geared bike used to require moving the lever all the way over then nudging the chain off with a toe.

29er MTB. The gear thing is the shifter. The ratchet's worn out.

I don't want to but I think Shimano will make mo go nine speed.

anyone going to be in Waverley this week and able to see when any cafe opens?

Would be good (essential really) to have a coffee prior to boarding.

Looks like the cafe nero should be open from 5! https://caffenero.com/uk/stores/edinburgh-waverley-404/

@Iain McR will just have to watch you all consume your super early Caffé Nero coffees as he is OF COURSE going to cleave to his ongoing boycott.

Costa also opens at 5 (according to the Network Rail website), Iain McR's boycott is safe.

IWRATS - would be great to have you along. There's some place on the south side that does cheap second hand bike bits, can't quite remember the name of it...

Does "29er MTB" mean neither 622-20 about the rim or 130mm across the axle? I have two spare normal rear almost-wheels,

Exactly how many bikes are you/we planning to fit onto the 0600? And will they fit?

Still wavering about doing this ride, as I haven't done a lot of miles for about a month owing to annual leave and too much DIY at home.

    @wingpig

Sorry yes it means exactly that. And those wheels would be dandy but I cannot access the largest sprocket on the cassette and I'm swithering about what new gear setup to adopt.

I could re-index the shifter starting on the big sprocket I suppose....don't get much use of top gear on that ride.

Costa or Cafe Nero - wooooow.

@ Arellcat - probably. I think we can reasonably get three bikes in each of the two bikes spaces. Unless its the carriages with those awful bike cubicles, in which case one is a struggle.

It may require some slight overlooking of the rules by the Guard, but at 0555 I don't imagine there will be many other passengers. On occasion I have found myself the only passenger until Shawfair or Eskbank at that time in the morning.

The most bikes I've seen on the train early doors must have been around 8. The guards can be quite flexible if you are too (ie don't block passageways and doors).

    What's the weather forecast?

Tempted to reindex on the big sprocket and risk it.

(I'm sounding needy am not I?)

Weather not looking bad - temp starting at 10c and rising to 15c. Light cloud. Wind 8mph (gust up to 18mph).

Seriously tempted by the turnout due to lack of cycling this week - and an early start on Saturday would be good for my 3am wake up on Sunday for PfS.

Reckon we'd be able to squeeze yet another bike on the 0600? If we get told we can't all get on, they're every ~30 minutes, right?

My bike's trying to stop me. First it still had winter tyres on in August, then the valve blew out of the rear tube after I'd changed the tyre, then the wheel was perceptibly non-round, then after I'd re-seated the tyre and had one day to get used to gears again the chain snapped 100m from the house this morning.

Today is cursed. Puncture, popped valve core in replacement tube, punctured third tube.
