Aye looks not to bad, lumens rating is massively exaggerated the raw emitters can only produce 500lm and that is before losses to optics etc.. They'll be pretty floody for road use but if you point them correctly they'll be plenty bright.

Getting ready for winter

well its mainly to allow me to go down the innocent path in the early hours (0300 ish)

I'm sure tbc could sort you out with an equally good light but it'll be three times the price, though odds are that'll be reflected in the build quality.
Deal extreme have the same light for 45 usd but they can take an age to deliver. The magic shine lights are quite well regarded as far as cheap Chinese imports go.

Yes, it was a nice change today to put my mitts back on and wear one layer fewer under my fleece!
According to Edinburgh University's weather station, which we haven't mentioned in a while, the thermometerness plummeted nine degrees within an hour mid-morning on Monday, and then climbed five degrees since midnight today (Friday 21st, for those reading this post after today). Tomorrow I have been mostly fitting Ice Spikers.

I'm pretty sure I once cycled through a temperature drop like that. At West Saltoun it was shirtsleeve weather; by East Saltoun crossroads it was like being inside a fridge. It wasn't lapse-rate either as the road's flat there.

How does this fall under the justice secretary's remit?
I can see people dying from the cold as an injustice but justice, in the case of a government ,usually means law

Once there is more than an inch on the roads (never mind pavements) when I get up and there is no sign of it letting up I will don the pogu foot spikes and walk. Two falls in two days (in the same spot almost re-using the indentation my body made the day before no-less) last year thanks to the buried tram tracks and that was with the winter "hack" bike. Rear wheel replaced on it not so long ago but now the freewheel is bust and I do not feel the need to repair a bike for 3 weeks of the year what was basically a cheap igor patchup discardo anyway. Has lain unused for a year at the bottom of the stairwell - anyone want a spare frame/tyres/bits?
I found the spikes were too much fun as I found I could run on ice (Dalry Road South side pavement on the stertch past Sillycon computing had a foot wide hump of ice from the overflowing gutters above that nobody was standing on at the 4 deep bus stop queue, it was the only space left so I walked then ran past everyone giggling like a child. Same day ran UP Glouscester street on packed snow/ice/cobbles past 5 stunned looking tourists towing heavy suitcases (they really needed to find an alternative route)
Another reason for walking is I will most likely get roped into volunteering to clear snow from the playground at the bairn's school and in preparation for that I have stockpiled 3 (three) snow shovels from Makro that look like they need a few screws added. Will raid grit bins and store grit in our underground garage as I cleared the access road and corner of West Bryson more times than I care to remember last year and got fed up with people dumping huge wads of it rather than sprinkling economically each day...
I highly recommend them to anyone
Oh yes and I will be buying a set of autosocks for any trips we may have to make in the car to grandparents or for emergenciesUPDATE: same site as the autosocks have half price ice spikes called Veriga and look like a complete copy of the pogu ones just without the velcro strap that is meant to keep them secure on your foot in the event of the spikes getting stuck in the ice/tarmac and you pulling your show out of them

Well I've ordered but not yet fitted a set of schwalbes spikies, I've ordered but not yet collected a 1w cherry bomb from tbc to accompany the original type I already have and applied some more retro-reflective tape to various steeds, and of course I ride a Surly LHT 26" which is of course nuclear winter proof as standard ;-)
Clothing wise, the cold (when it arrives) allows me just to stick cycling waterproof jacket/trousers over work clothes, most of my bikes run half and half pedals so I can wear clip ins or hiking boots as required, and glove wise a cheap pair of full finger fleecies from t*sco did all last winter :-)
A good wooly hat and I should be sorted.I've got most of the parts for a set of sod off bright headlights, just need to source some 1"sq alloy bar and spend some time with the dremel next, oh and build a battery pack for it...

Dynamo front light arrived today, but in all the misleading confusion of BuM's website I appear to have bought one pre-wired for a tail light (the IQ Fly had contacts for tail light but not actual wires and clips).
Will have to see if I can wire it up without the tail light and cover over the naked clamps with lots of insulation tape.

Mudguards and marathon +'s have gone on the fixed wheel today. Replaced broken spoke re trued wheel and replaced the Beautiful but broken Middleburn cranks with the classic looking SR/ stronglite. The winter beater looks positively gentrified!!
