So if you're in the "cycle lane" and want to turn left off Princes Street, you need to slow down (risking getting shunted by a tram), cross the rails (at a suitable angle), then cross two lanes of traffic?

Is the other lane going to be available? I assume we're free to take our chances with taxis on normal tarmac and that the lane is "cyclist may use" rather than "cyclists must use", but it's still incredibly daft that an organisation which went so far as to arrange training for safe track-crossing has recommended, through the media of green gunk and white paint, that cyclists travel in a space so narrow it would be impossible to cross the rails to escape at a recommended near-perpindicular angle.

I don't think you will be able to turn left off Princes St until perhaps S St Andrew St. I know where I will be cycling if on Princes St, in amongst the cars...no intention of ever using that piece of designated cycle path, no way!
I won't be leading any cycle rides to north Embra anytime soon coming back via Rodney St, Inverleith. I will also be avoiding any need to go into the town centre, as St Andrew's Sq is unpassable, Dublin St, Broughton St are either shut or a nightmare as is Picardy Pl. George St is a disgrace and downright dangerous as a cyclist. What a total fiasco the whole thing is, and I quite agree Min the place is a hole/tip just rubbish...
This only cost 60m and is finished and up and running and will be able to take 2,500 passengers in an hour!!

The stupid green "cycle lane" is meant to allow you to enter / leave Princes Street via (the currently closed) Shandwick Place. I'm not sure if there will be other lanes to allow you in or out, but if you use it, getting out will be very difficult at the angle of 60-90 degrees recommended by TIE / Edinburgh Trams itself

There'll be no advantage to using the cycle lane unless you want to get from one end of Princes St to the other, and fancy a bit of inter-tram interval training. The best tool for the job is probably Rabid Hamster's trike with the Big Apple tyres.

I've had a call from David O' Leary at the Evening News, Kim put him on to me.
Plan for some photos of cross-looking cyclists pointing at p***-poor cycling facilities on Princes Street.
Meeting c. 530 on the plaza between the National Galleries, please bring yourself and your bike along if possible.
EEN isn't always the cyclists' friend, but if they do one thing well, it's front page banner headlines about tram scandals!

Hmmm. A bit odd to assemble on the Mound when the offending green splodgings are to the west of South Charlotte Street. I might hang around the relevant area but I'm not doing anything which might get me mistaken for a Critical Masser.

So not only Gehl architects but also this Dutch report, bith advocating segregated infrastructure for cycling and a reduction of space for motor vehicles.
Somehow such proposals seem to be anathema to the city council. Why? What logic do they use to ignore or reject them? What arguments are there?
Or is it simply fear of the wrath of the local paper and drivers that causes them to constantly fudge the issue?

Arellcat: My MTB has 2" tyres and while they don't drop down into the grooves the way most 700c tyres will, you get enough grab that I'm fairly sure you'd have an off unless you were, like me, deliberately going over them with the full expectation of mischief.
I think RabidHamster might need to upgrade to Fat Franks, although to be on the safe side, I think we'd all be best getting a Pugsley.
Pretty sure the planning folk wouldn't pass anything that required a 4x4 to traverse, even if that would make the Chelsea Tractor crowd feel even more smug than they already do.

I can't help picturing the high heid yins at CEC Princes Street HQ, and on their coffee table the Gehl report and Spokes' advice and all these survey stats, everything saying 'Pedestrianise! Trees! Bicycles!", while they shift uncomfortably from one foot to the other, wringing their hands and saying "I know we should, but we just can't! Our buses are too precious to us, and we need George Street for parking revenue!"
Meanwhile the Dutch carry on making life enjoyable, and cyclists in Edinburgh sigh and go back to studying their maps to work out the best way to circumvent the perpetual roadworks.

In fairness, the article tries to be balanced, giving right of reply to the council. The reporting of anything that inconveniences motorists (bus lane cameras, seaside car park charges, roadworks) is rarely balanced in this way, however.

@SRD they would have to give the council right to reply, and being a public body they have a very carefully crafted, non-commital, wash-their-hands-of-it, approved-by-the-legal-department press release response.
I like their response, as it's blatantly false they've given one sh** about cyclists and cycling all through the tram project.
I'm going to cycle the route end-end tomorrow and catalogue all current infringements on cycling and cycling infrastructure caused by the trams. And compile my own "ARE YOU BL**DY JOKING" response to the council / trams department.
