Tshirt, long sleeved shirt and Altura waterproof hivis jacket, to replace the three layers I shredded in my off last month.

Got a pair of MTB shoes at the weekend too.

Lezyne Power Drive front light, just in time for summer! I realised I was unlikely to get time to build my day bringer in the next few months and at the same time its starting to look like the only free time I'll have is after 8 at night...

Nothing but will sort this today, starting with bib shorts and matching top (well if decathlon have my size. I find them to be a bit duff at stock control, too much of some stuff, sold out of others) moving on via wine shop to EBC for my ortlieb patches which look to be expensive puncture repair kit.

@gembo if you haven't already bought the Ortleib patches, I should have some spare.

A bit of retail therapy after retail necessity for me today. On my ride to Kinross and back. I noticed a hole had appeared in the sidewall of my much-loved Conti GP Force rear tyre. Fortunately, Sandy Wallace Cycles in Inverkeithing was on my route and they fitted a Schwalbe Blizzard Sport in its place (fitted FOC). On the way back, I nipped back in and bought a pair of Endura Full Monty long-finger gloves and Vavert cushioned grips for my hardtail, things I was needing at some point and it just seemed a way of saying thank you for the earlier service.

Thanks Kaps, see cross post re cycle yesterday.

My panniers are not in good shape. One month short of five year warranty. Some holes on bottom and some splits inthe seams. Holes I can repair but split seams I doubt.

I bought one of the two sets ortlieb sent. £7.50 and a puncture repair kit. I am wondering if I should just have let ortlieb fix them, as if they can do the seams that would be good. You assume they will do a thorough job.

Read on a website you should patch inside and out. Guy in EBC claiming the cement slightly stronger than puncture repair kit cement but looks to be highly similar. The patches are clear. The ones on the website were coloured the same colour as your panniers.

If I ever return to a new pair of ortliebs, very dear, I will always run two and keep all sharps in pencil case. That way I will not burst the seams and and hole on the bottom will be fixable.

Running two smaller EBC ones, very cheap, doing the business but have to put covers on and vaude fixing not as good as ortlieb, little inside bit says stuck on rack sometimes

  8. Started stripping parts of the Kaff at the weekend in preparation for all the new parts. Got the new bars and grips and brake levers on, and have decided that I need some nice new brakes (looks slightly odd with a flat bar now, but not in a bad way, the bar is slightly narrower than I'd anticipated - despite being provided with the dmiensions, they're as wide as the mousetache bars, but with the different hand position put me a couple of inches in on either side - can't wait to get it together for a proper spin).

Going to try the downtube shifters initially, can swap to bar thumbies if it all seems too much hassle.

In the meantime, need to get the new X7 rear mech onto the mountain bike and decide whether to put the 26" slicks back on, or the Fire XC Pro knobblies and consider an early morning Glentress visit.

Getting the bike out for club ride this morning it was a bit drizzly so I unfolded my pocket waterproof and put it on. Zip immediately broke. So I binned it and decided I would just have to get wet. As it turned out the drizzle stopped pretty much as soon as I set off so it was fine. Loads of overdressed clubmates on the ride though!

Remembered Aldi had cycling gear this week so nipped up after the ride to see if there was anything left. Still plenty in the Chorley store. There's loads of cyclists round here but mostly fashion-conscious roadies and I think Aldi may have over-estimated demand.

Got a replacement "Ultralight" jacket for £9.99 which seems better, if anything, than the Madison one I just binned.

    Also got:

Mitts, £3.49. Padding perhaps a bit thick but I need a new pair and I'm a bit skint, so they'll do.

Black lycra shorts £7.99. Won a watch here as when I got home and unwrapped them I found they have the same "Coolmax" pad as the Endura 3/4 length ones which I must have paid about 4x the price for.

"Compression" knee warmers. The jacket and shorts I went for Medium but as the Knee-warmers were labelled as unisex I bought large. Proved to be the correct decision. Pretty good for £6.99 and much less bulky in the back pocket than full leg-warmers. I reckon these will get a fair bit of use over the summer on the early starts or in the pocket on evening rides.

Don't need any panniers so I passed on those but they actually looked well worth the £14.99 a pair they're asking for them. Likewise SPD shoes which I think were £19.99.

I bought small arm warders as they tend to fall down. They were a bit tight, nautilus have also bought medium arm warmers. Boughtbtwonpairs of specs but have lost one pair already. Bought the 9.99 jacket, went for the women's white one asit was same as the one I bought last year which was gents. Also toolkit wch I donated to woods deli. So £35 in total.

Had some Tri Centre vouchers from 2011 and finally spent them... one pair of arm warmers (I lost one of the old pair, which have always been too big for me) and one pair of summer gloves (my old pair are on their way out).

Shorts from Decathlon, have to admit my preconceptions of non branded stuff have been blown away.

I can say in all honesty these shorts are the comfiest I have ever worn, and at £43 almost half the price of the Giordana ones which are the nearest in comfort of those I currently own.

Jury is still out on robustness, and longevity etc, but if they last any where near as long as my other shorts, I can say in all honesty that I will continue with these.

I would tend to go for a smaller size in arm-warmers too. Having cycled throughout my childhood and teens my legs are quite chunky but I have arms like the original Mr Muscle...

Picked up an old 700c hybrid frame off ebay as a little summer project. Came with flat bars but I've already got a set of drops on there....yes, my ambition is to cajole, fettle, bodge and otherwise persuade this frame into being my first road bike. Not wanting to spend all that much on it so I'll be scrounging what bits I can out the bikestation. Decided to go for some new parts as well though, for comfort and safety - mainly wheels, tyres and modern aero brake levers with a mini V brake on the front instead of the nightmare of cantilevers. Shifters are oldschool shimano SIS units like these:

Which I've fitted to the ends of the drops as improvised bar end shifters - seems to work well despite the odd appearance.

I finally got new mudguards delivered! \o/

50mm 700c SKS ones, which apparently are good for up to 45mm tyres.

I rode down the WoL path to work today and while pleasant, I felt my current tyres (~37mm at the front, 32mm at the back) weren't all they could be. Don't want to have to start grinding my MTB 20 miles a day though!

Second that. Most armwarmers fall down on me. Had to stump up for expensive Assos ones as they were the only ones that were slight enough in a "large" to stay on. Man in Veloecosse explained that Assos kit is pretty much one size (Xsmall), it just gets longer as you go up through the size on the label.

I am weak weak weak, and just gave in to n+1... Fancied a cyclocross shaped upgrade to my commuter hybrid for a while, and finally plumped for the Revolution Cross Sport 13

looked like fantastic value for money, and first spin on her this morning along the WOL path seems to confirm this - now she just needs a name...

Scratch that last post - catastrophic blowout of front tube (shop fitted!) this evening, actually blew the tire off the rim!

Back to the shop with you then...

Faulty tyre? I assumed bad tube - wasn't aware that a tyre could be faulty! (So recomendation is to take both tyre and tube back for replacement rather than just the tube then?)

When that's happened to me before it's been an incorrectly seated, or worn, tyre.

I need people to talk me out of getting this: http://www.planet-x-bikes.co.uk/i/q/FRPXPCTV2/planet_x_pro_carbon_track_frame

It's for road use, and inspired by the fact I really enjoyed a recent 50-miler on my daily mudguard/rack/steel/32mm tyre brute fixie.

I've got virtually all the other parts to build a fixed device around it, courtesy of black fruity.

Kaputnik has made a sound argument in favour of the TT frame of equal cost, which has track-ish forks rather than dropouts, but I assume it won't be in 120mm, which means it won't fit the wheel I already own.

    Well it's not pretty...

But the carbon weave does have a pretty pattern.

The aero sections look like they approximate a 4:1 taper, but it'll need a matching monoblade on the front, some proper TT handlebars and a pair of deep carbon wheels* to get the most out of it, otherwise the turbulent drag from spokes and torso will dominate.

    * not an Aerospoke, like this boy has.

I have a parachute for a face and am a beery heavy person, therefore I am going C12 for the stiffness, not the aero/weight. That would mean this http://www.dolan-bikes.com/Track%20FrameSets/Aluminium%20Track%20FrameSets/FXE?product_id=605 is a more sensible option, but...

Aluminium is tedious. Carbon fibre is cool.

I've some unused Bullhorn bars you can take off my hands. And some clip-on TT bars too that are surplus to requirements. You could make a decent aero set-up out of them.

Re the Aldi knee-warmers, I take it all back. Definitely don't recommend them. If they were any smaller I wouldn't be able to get them on, but the hems aren't elastic-y enough, so they gradually work their way down.

    Shorts are great though...
