CityCyclingEdinburgh was launched on the 27th of October 2009 as "an experiment".
IT’S TRUE!
CCE is 15years old!
Well done to ALL posters
It soon became useful and entertaining. There are regular posters, people who add useful info occasionally and plenty more who drop by to watch. That's fine. If you want to add news/comments it's easy to register and become a member.
RULES No personal insults. No swearing.

First class tickets to London shortly to be put to use, so I may not get much time to comments. No point letting the proles drag you down!
he's trying to brass it out, eh
get him reported, that's bang out of order
Totally out of order o_0 says. Since you have video footage of him, why not offer it to the police and ask them to take action? I'm not sure what the best way of dealing with it is, other than to do whatever allows you to keep calm (it's nicer than being enraged all the way to work).
Just another thought - thank heavens, of course, cycling in Edinburgh is much more than rubbish like this; there are lots of good bits too ..
Reminds me of the bum-clenchingly bad magnatom video with the trailer; the height of the self-erected dissonant wall that protects these people from the fact they suck at car is dizzying.
The Dunning-Kruger effect again I suppose. (I'm afraid I didn't watch the video - I want to hang on to a few shreds of my peace of mind today)
He is an idiot, that is clear.
But while he probably was, I didnt see him driving while using the phone - it was in his hand when you spoke to him, but that will prove nothing.
I don't think this is entirely representative of ALL cycling in Edinburgh. There are some bad drivers, equally I have been given lots of space by others recently.
Just trying to be balanced.
Cc if you watch it with the sound down not too bad. Guy in funny land rover with a chimney. Cuts dave up at a junction, coming on when he should have given way. Dave catches him up further along and has a chat. The lights change but there is then a pretend polite exchange where he invites dave to go first and dave says, no after you etc, this goes on a while.
That is my interpretation of the low sound version.
I had similar experience at a bus stop after the two door cinema club gig at corn exchange onthursday. Bus came and I pointed out to some youth they should let the poor woman who had been waiting patiently on the bus first. Actually, the youth became immediately very civil and polite. My daughter and her pals still a little embarrassed.
@gembo Thank you! Glad it wasn't as awful as I had assumed.
And good for you, I say.
Is a bit worse with the sound up.
Also the mobile phone is in his hand going round the last corner but maybe not when he drove in front of dave?
Curiously aftermwatching the clip, myoutube splitsmthenscreenninto four and you get some odd clips to choose from, nothing to do with dave.
Sound down time, a hub gear diagram, two others and a woman in a bikini in a car. Sound up, the hub gear replaced with ducklings, a car going over a sand dune, a hrs bike lane and bikini woman again. i haven't clicked on any of these, honest. Must investigate what my kids are watching of youtube again.
I thought you weren't even allowed to be holding a phone if the engine was running. If mine rings (a rare event) I pull in, turn off the engine and check who called. I usually leave it turned off but I get in trouble with the memsahib.
gembo,
"Curiously aftermwatching the clip, myoutube splitsmthenscreenninto four and you get some odd clips to choose from, nothing to do with dave."
Those are supposed to be "related" clips to follow on from what you've been watching, but the links can often be tenuous at best! That's the problem with allowing computers to run things ;-)
Just to update on this, I reported using 101, but was told that even though it is on video no action will be taken - to the extent that they didn't even want to know the time the incident took place.
Not very satisfactory IMO. Any suggestions for who to hassle?
I sort of half wonder whether EEN might pick it up on the back of the guy who was beaten up by the unprosecuted van driver. It's just about local and controversial enough (especially as I was en route to check out the tramwork free St Andrew sq, that's the tram angle covered).
It's actually very difficult to figure out how to escalate anything. So far the only option I've identified is to raise a direct complaint against the person who took my call (as I have their ID number) but that doesn't seem correct, as I'm sure they don't just wing it but instead have some kind of guidelines they just follow.
Other than that... nothing. There's lots of pretty pictures on the Police Scotland website but nothing of use to identify channels of communication at all.
In the video, due to the wide angle lens, it's difficult to see that this was a close call. Also, the viewer can't tell if you had to brake/brake hard to avoid a collision...
Am I the only person who wants to know who gave in first?
@edd1e_h I'm not sure how that's relevant, since the video wasn't watched.
If someone in officialdom watched the video and said "okay, he's tapping on the phone but he might not actually be texting, so we'll let him off" that would be one thing.
@Baldcyclist I tricked him with a double u-turn.
wasn't there some local head cop saying how important it was to always report this stuff?
maybe you should try and get a hold of him directly, find out what the procedure is

@EdinNorthPolice It would help if police took driver aggression towards cyclists seriously. I am abused daily on my bike, but can do nothing

@EdinNorthPolice @MaggieEdinburgh I was spat at & driven at. Police refused to ask for witnesses. Message = Police don't care about cyclists
"
Yes, it's outright nonsense. It's cheap and easy for the police to insist that road safety is taken seriously and that's the take home message for most people.
Not many will discover the truth, unless they're unlucky enough to try and report a video of dangerous driving and given the fob off.
Part of a general trend, I'm afraid. It's called cutbacks:
'Community resolutions' used in 10,000 serious violence cases
More than 10,000 serious violent crimes were dealt with informally last year, despite guidelines to the contrary. Police used "community resolutions", which can include an apology or compensation to the victim, instead of prosecutions and cautions. The Association of Chief Police Officers says resolutions should only be used for low-level crime.
I don't think that cutbacks are the reason for the prevalent policing attitude.
I believe that the police force are a motor-centric institution with a fundamental recognition that an acceptable by-product of our high speed motoring culture is that many vulnerable road users, whether they be cyclists or pedestrians, will receive rough and tumble treatment in the aggressive arena of road use.
Of course, they have to be seen to act in certain cases where grievous injury has occurred.
But otherwise - that's just the way it is out there, i wouldn't let my sons or daughters cycle on those roads, shrug of the shoulders, no incident number, etc etc.
I had a wee nibble from the EEN. Although I did prepare a soundbite I still rambled on a bit, so I'm not sure how it will be written up...
Oh hateness directed straight at you... Will they be linking to your website?
No idea. I guess if they link to the video in any way then it will reach back from there.
Spent a long (!) time being photographed near the office in various entertaining poses with my headcam, so I look forward to seeing what they come out with there - might have to ask for a copy for my CV!
Interestingly this is just about the only video on my YouTube channel that wasn't taken from the car, illustrating one thing or another.
