  1. Seems it's the tenth anniversary of the farmers market on Castle Terrace.

And show a valid parking ticket (the first 100 to do so) and you get £2... Sustainable promotion?

I have to admit here that we go to the market every week, and at the moment we're taking the car every week as my other half still isn't able to cycle any major distance (i.e. anything over 20 minutes or so on the bike). But given the very nature of a farmers market - promoting local stuff, lack of food miles, healthy, etc etc etc where's the bike promotion? There are always LOADS of bikes lined up on the railings (indeed, mine was one of them most of last year, and is whenever I go myself).

I completely agree. We usually bus or cycle -- and I would have thought most people do too. This is a rubbish promotion. Did anyone _think_ about it?!

Shall try to find time to write them and the stallholders who we have details of, but since it is all outsourced, I doubt council will want to hear? maybe worth at least contacting green councillors?

"Join us on the 3rd July between 9am - 2pm. We will have live entertainment throughout the day as well as prizes for the customers, here is what we have in store"

    http://www.edinburghfarmersmarket.com/news_detail.aspx?pageID=8&newsID=34

When are 'we' going to see if there is enough bike parking?

"£2 given to the first 100 customrers, a valid parking ticket must be shown"

Anyone want to design a valid BICYCLE parking ticket...

I suppose it would have to say FREE, but if enough were handed in it might make the point.

I won't be there...but have written to those producers whose emails I have, and a letter using the form on their site. Anyone know who on council would have some sort of 'responsibility'?

I would just scan a parking ticket personally...

I'm not clear whether it's a CEC 'arms length company' but this is the CEC rep on the Board.

It would be interesting to know how many users of the market use "active travel" to get there. Given the location of the market, there are about 500,000 people who could easily access the market by "active travel", there really is no need for there to be a car park behind it, CEC really should close it ;-)

I think they should go further than that and grass it over, turn it into a multistori farm, chickens ground floor, sheep frist floor, cows 2nd floor, veg growing top floor...

it's what's gonna happen when the

    • oil runs out
    • revolution comes
    • plague hits
    • solar flares hit
    • zombies invade

So it's not like peak oil where you'll never know if it's happened or not?

Back on topic - our own Anth in the Guardian.

I may try to respond - in so far as we've always gotten there by bus and bike - despite small child -- who made her first visit to the market the Saturday after she was born, and has been a regular ever since.

But I am a bit busy packing the trailer for the big cycle this weekend (the first time we've tried to go overnight on bike). Thanks to everyone from the forum who has contributed kit and advice!

"Obviously people still use cars coming into the market with families" he said "If you've got a small child, for example."

So the families in Edinburgh that use buses, walk or bike get no reward. Whole thing is A to E.
    PR own goal I'd say.

    came across this: http://www.tollcross.org/news/farmersmarketsfacingtheirbiggestchallenge/farmers-markets-challenge

disappointing to see someone as sensible as John Fletcher saying 'other farmer's markets started up in places where it is easy to park'. can you imagine anywhere cheaper to park than on top of a carpark?

@chdot - when people arrive at petrol stations and there is no petrol we will know...

    @spytfyre

I expect we'll know before then - but after those who 'ought to know' tell us...

The heart of the issue is the comment that "Nobody has to pay to shop at supermarkets." here in lies the problem. We encourage the use of supermarkets by allowing the use of subsidised parking, if there were a tax on parking spaces, this could easily be equalised.

    "subsidised parking"

Now there's a concept most cars users wouldn't understand!

Or at least they would assume that the 'cost'/subsidy is a small part of the grocery (etc.) price - which is partly true.

What is needed is a land-use tax, with a clear policy of increased rates for (predominantly) 'out of town' shopping.

But of course there are 'commercial interests' and 'individual freedoms'.

The present UK Government is set on reducing public expenditure and raising 'easy taxes' (VAT). This will inevitably have profound effects on many people, which, in its own way, is 'social engineering'.

But there seems little chance of them saying 'you're not getting that new road because it's not a good idea' - it's 'we can't afford it because the last lot messed up the economy'.

With Health there is not enough thought about prevention - making walking/cycling easy/safe/normal etc. - because the main benefits will only emerge many years after several 5 year Parliaments.

Similarly commuting. On here it would be much nicer if 8.30-9.30 and 4.30- 5.30 (approx) was more carfree and carefree.

Would change if there was any will to restrict/tax 'workplace parking' - all those New Town backgreeens and underground carparks.

Sarah Boyack tried this in the first year of the new Scottish Parliament and was savaged by people in her own party and the Daily Record plus the opposition.
