Tell you what, Andrew Gilligan hasn't half lost weight since he took up cycling.

Oooh look, they work if you go round them clockwise as well as anticlockwise! Who knew?

Sarcasm aside, such a roundabout would need pretty heavy signposting: "Motorists give way to cyclists crossing side roads", "cyclists you have priority, keep moving" because many people won't have seen a thing like that before and will need a bit of advice as to how it works.

Perhaps, but the unusualness of the roundabout tends to put a driver on guard, precisely because they're not entirely sure what to do. It's like the naked streets concept. They slow down and observe.

Confusion at 2mins 4s where driver doesn't know cyclist has right of way and cyclist has to stop. Can see lots of that happening initially.

Drivers will need retrained to use such roundabouts rather than just signage, as road users (deliberate use to include all) tend not to pay much attention to signs.

I can't see these being rolled out in the UK until the second half of this century, unfortunatley.

Employ a man with a red flag at each motor vehicle entrance of the roundabout to pilot cars through...

    Probably cheaper than this system!

It's not quite right; the cycle track should be coloured red, and the red colour should extend across the intersection with motor vehicles. Also, it should use British Give Way markings - it currently uses Dutch markings, and people are bound to be confused by this. These changes would make it clearer that cyclists have priority.

That said, it's good to see them considering things like this instead of the usual shambles at long last. The sooner it comes to real streets, the better.
