Excellent - £424,000 for more advertising, which can be summed up as:
"Motorists - stop running over cyclists and pedestrians"
"Cyclists - obey the law chaps"
"Pedestrians - keep out of the way of the real traffic"Honestly, who could think of a better way of investing this money?

"The Cycle Hub Team will provide support and expert knowledge on local routes and networks"
If you have to tell people about local routes and networks, does that not suggest that they are not in the right place? Sounds like cycling for leisure rather than everyday transport again...

"Honestly, who could think of a better way of investing this money?"
great competition idea. how would *you* spend £400 000 and improve cycling?

I'd employ a guy in a van to drive behind me to ensure I can safely take the lane the whole time... what it would improve road conditions for me! :p

I think the cycle hubs themselves are a good idea, nothing wrong with making it easier to switch between bikes and trains. I can think of lots of uses for £400K though

Well that's rubbish...

Given that £400k is quite a lot of public money, perhaps it would be worth asking Transport Scotland how they intend to measure the effectiveness of the campaign.
Metrics like KSI are probably out of scope, and 'Nearly Hit' and 'Got A Load Of Abuse From Another Road User' aren't going to be the pinnacle of rigour either. Judicious use of surveys is always a nice way of gathering data, as long as you get a fair representation of the people of Scotland (I was going to say 'population', but that would be confused with the statistical population, which I wasn't meaning).

Sounds good on paper, but is mostly a soft 'look busy' activity that neatly diverts attention away from the national unwillingness to put the infrastructure and laws in place.

I've asked Cycling Scotland for the data on how the assessed the effectiveness of 'give me cycle space'. haven't received anything yet.

A few 10s of thousand would get you a few simple data loggers based around this sort of thing.

Dole out to a 200 or so volunteers to mount on their bikes for the commute and watch as the average overtake distance increases over the campaign then decreases afterwards (to hopefully a slightly higher average).
I was going to make a snide comment about soft assessment using surveys that Cycle Scotland will probably come back with to @SRD but actually the perceived safety of cyclists is probably just as important in terms of increasing uptake - which I think is the aim of the game.

If they've surveyed cyclists, that could be interesting. Suspicion is, they surveyed drivers.

I was thinking that surveying not cyclists (rather than drivers) about it would be closer to the mark. You would hope to see a reduction in the number of respondents describing cycling on the road as a dangerous activity .

I agree that money for media is a sop, its convient, it doesnt clash with other groups use of the road and its impossible to measure its effectiveness. Keith Brown loves it, so thats the final nail.

SRD: "how would *you* spend £400 000 and improve cycling?"
I'd randomly hand out £100 cycling goods vouchers to cyclists commuting into work in December.
