Seems to be some sort of 'charity' event.

A hundred quid to ride round the city with drunk drivers for company... Thanks but I'll take my chances with the rest of the traffic.

Holyrood, Calton, Musselburgh, Newhaven, Cramond, Blackford, Liberton, Newington, Princes St, Grassmarket, Holyrood.

Seems a bit convoluted. The challenge is to use only the Inner Tube routes!

7-8 September: night before the freshnlo Pedal For Scotland? Might reduce their client base a tad...

What a weird event. I can't imagine many people would travel any distance to ride at night in Edinburgh and it isn't sufficiently interesting for those of us based here to do it. Can't see this one taking off....

I am not likely to go but it sounds quite cool to me.

    However..

as we pass through in the moonlight.

Not according to my moon calculator. Unless you count a teeny nail clipping as moonlight.

Doesn't sound as good as the Ridiculous Reekie Roll although possibly a greater chance that this one will actually happen.

Ho ho - bit like planning a trip to Cramond Island without looking at a tide table!

Unless they route it past 24 hour garages/supermarkets (to purchase spare batteries) anyone doing the ride will need dynamo lighting or to carry several packets of batteries on the ride.

I reckon if I want to ride 50 miles through the night in September I'll just enter a DIY 300k: at my pace I'll be doing 1/3 of it after dusk...

"This is a rare chance to explore the nooks and crannies of the Scottish capital at a time when much of the traffic has abated"

Why do I get the feeling this is going to come back and haunt them?

Doesn't look like a 'bad' event as such but I get the impression it's not really been thought through fully.

We finish our challenge by cycling along Princes Street with a great view of the Scott Monument before pedaling triumphantly onto the Grassmarket and Cowgate, through the night life of the city and finally onto the Royal Mile and our finish line next to Holyrood Palace!

Note this is on a Saturday night, just as the worst of the drunks are fighting each other down the Grassmarket and Cowgate. No thanks!

Think I'd rather do something like this -

    The Brooklyn Challenge

Shame people seem to be on such a downer when someone's trying to organise cycling events in our home town. Granted the planning could be better but perhaps positive criticism would be more helpful?

if they want a local leader then some people here may have the knowledge (if the price is right!).

From my perspective the number of people even wanting to pay £17 to be led round the path network is miniscule (and that includes bike hire too).

Good luck to them, but why anyone would pay a ton for this is a mystery to me.

This looks more fun, much more expensive though:

Might make an interesting audax, for a lot less outlay...

I've always found late night cycling in Edinburgh to be most agreeable.

I think this is a red cross fundraiser. I thought it sounded quite fun if im honest.

Late at night is absolutely the best time to ride around Edinburgh city centre, but best on a week night if you plan on going anywhere near Lothian Rd or Grassmarket/Cowgate areas. This thread reminds me that it's something I really enjoy and haven't done often enough. If this stinking cold clears off by Sunday night I may just head out before travelling back down south on Monday.

Unfortunately, I wasn't in town for the Coastal Night Ride during the Edinburgh Festival of Cycling. I would *love* to go for a night ride at some point, so I'd looked into this one. But the price is quite prohibitive! The Red Cross night ride is actually the same ride as the Global Adventure Challenges. Global Adventure Challenges require you to raise money for charity, any charity -- Red Cross just forward you to them but ensure that the charity you raise for is them.

Anyway -- does anyone know of a night night starting/finishing in/around Edinburgh that *doesn't* cost a fortune to join? It's not quite the same just cycling around in circles by myself. I'm assuming I'll just have to wait and hope they do a coastal night ride at next year's Festival of Cycling.

Sounds too much like winter commuting to me.

Just plan your own, if your stuck for a route there are plenty who could route you round a few nice city landmarks.

Shades of pedal fatigue? I recall about 10? years ago, when a charity ride with a big sponsor input was organised for same weekend as Edinburgh-St Andrews ride - it got 1 person registering to ride, and eventually got cancelled when the charity organisers (who had little connection with the cycling diaspora) realised that they should have done a bit more research in to the dates available.

Eventually the idea - fundraising - let's have a bike ride might wane in the same way that charity walks no longer have the same prominence that they did when I was younger (and fitter) and did a 42 miler at an average speed of 4.4 mph. It was fun after going home for a bath to go back to the finish and greet the others coming in and assuming I'd given up!

Edinburgh Road Club do a night club ride every Wednesday through the winter. Usually out into the depths of East or Mid Lothian for a few hours. Always a blast and well patronised (unless it's raniing!)

"Usually out into the depths of East or Mid Lothian"

Perhaps a trip to Hopetoun Monument with a scramble up the steep slope and winding steps for a night time view?

'Spose Road Clubbers just like to keep riding(?)

There have been "trips" to places before, like the haunted house in Saltoun for Hallowe'en.

I think they call themselves the WNRW, the Wednesday Night Road Warriors. It's a steady ride with lots of stops for punctures.

Indeed. Although "worriers" would be more accurate that "warriors" :)
