Does it matter?
(Previously here: http://citycyclingedinburgh.info/bbpress/topic.php?id=10246#post-111542)
CityCyclingEdinburgh was launched on the 27th of October 2009 as "an experiment".
IT’S TRUE!
CCE is 15years old!
Well done to ALL posters
It soon became useful and entertaining. There are regular posters, people who add useful info occasionally and plenty more who drop by to watch. That's fine. If you want to add news/comments it's easy to register and become a member.
RULES No personal insults. No swearing.
Does it matter?

"Does it matter?"
Probably.
I'm sure that the % of female bike users in Edinburgh is higher than the % of women who happen to be CCE members.
Then again, CCE has never claimed to be representative.
For the first time in US history, 60 percent of bicycle owners between the ages of 18-27 are women.

If you want some benchmark, SHS says cyclists are 65% male and sex ratio is pretty similar across age groups. Best balance is among 35-44 year olds where it's 60:40.
The statistician in me raises a gnarled claw to suggest that the options are not mutually exclusive. I am/identify as male, and yet would also say it doesn't matter.
Whilst we're on the subject, the xkcd blog had rather a nice article on sex and gender in surveys:

I like data gathering :D
As the person known as Darkerdide has indicated, they normally reside on the west side of Scotland. 'We' don't discriminate.
@darkerside I believe I left open the option of multiple selections for exactly that reason (well, actually, because I knew someone would gripe if I didn't)
It's possible that this is one of the (few) areas where it *does* matter because there does seem to be consistent evidence that as cycling conditions improve, a higher proportion of cycling trips are done by women - for instance in the Netherlands 55% of cycling trips are done by women, not necessarily because more women cycle than men, but because women make more trips than men. Although how many of them want to then go onto a cycling forum online to talk about it, I don't know.
I've only ever (knowingly) met one person on this forum. The fun thing for me is that each persons user name gives me a certain image of that person, which will inevitably turn out to be completely wrong. Especially the people with an animal in their name...
What sally said: I started writing something like that but deleted it :)
@friskiffla - oh great, I should have just used my real name, rather than being thought of as a cold-blooded sea creature with poisonous fin rays...
I stand corrected SRD :P
@lionfish at least friskiffla doesn't think you have horns and go "moo"...
@lionfish - if you're not orange and stripey I will be immensely upset.
moo
Almost 60% of the posters on this thread are female.
I love how this thread has derailled massively from a discussion on forum gender composition to stating animal sounds. You can always rely on CCE digressing.
For me, when I first signed up I typically (and ashamedly) assumed that it was a predominantly bloke's forum. I was pleasantly surprised to learn otherwise.
No shame in predicting the probable - and statistically actual.
There is if it's based solely on the stereotype that women couldn't possibly want to discuss the mechanics of bikes! Which, of course, I appreciate is completely incorrect.
Besides, there aren't a huge proportion of mechanical threads (the current rear wheel topic at http://citycyclingedinburgh.info/bbpress/topic.php?id=10261 not withstanding) that crop up here: the greater proportion of threads seem to be news or chatter-related... Good ol' conversation.
So you're saying not-females gossip too...
Now, now - I never mentioned the "g" word! ;o)
True.
That tends to be an attempted male slur to implying that their chats are more worthy.
Which obviously...

Welcome to the Regency Riders, we cater for all abilities from the beginner not yet confident to ride on the open road to the more advanced cyclist who is training for their next challenge!

"Cycling club created for women by women"
Doesn't appear to be Edinburgh based? Unlike
http://www.hervelo.co.uk/
who are!
"Doesn't appear to be Edinburgh based?"
I know, just liked their rationale.
Think HV is more fullon racing)?)
I think Hervelo is quite a small club, and there's a good proportion who race - however they do advertise other kinds of riding as well, and I know they have run easy rides out to South Queensferry via Dalmeny in the past.
There's a magazine on sale called Women's Cycling. Not sure about apostrophe position.
Animal associations Neigh Chance
That apostrophe is fine. The cycling of women.
Re: Hervelo, I've been out with the "skinnies" group a few times and round Arthur's Seat for some hilly laps on the odd occasion so far this year. There's not much emphasis put on racing by those I've cycled with so far but I can't speak for the rest of the club and the other individual disciplines covered.
They're a great bunch. Really friendly and welcoming.
Re: Hervelo
Racing isn't particularly high up their agenda. Some race MTB, a few raced the Peebles Sprint, but the majority wouldn't put the competitive thing as why they ride bikes. They are more about just having fun on bikes and encouraging more people of the female persuasion to do the same, which is why they do "rustles" rides for folks who haven't ridden for a while or are new to it all.
