I'm not sure of the precise facts, but I'm sure I heard on the wireless this morning in the changing rooms at work that a couple of teenagers an 11 year old had been hit somewhere near Pencaitland yesterday evening while out on a bike ride. They described the offending white van in a manner that made me think it had perhaps failed to stop.

Don't see anything on the Beeb this morning, might appear on Hootsmon website later.

EDIT - a short article on STV here. Still not clear if it was a hit and run, it doesn't say it was, but it's reported as if Police are trying to trace the vehicle. Child at the Sick Kids with "serious injuries"

Says in the EEN (so it must be true) that the van driver is "helping police".

Poor kid, I hope he recovers okay.

For once I agree with a comment in the EEN: "Why are you allowing comments when this could end up in the courts. You can't resist a bit of cyclist/driver trolling, can't you EEN."

(although I'm on an online forum commenting on it! Maybe a pot/kettle situation?)

Anyway: 2nd Min; hoping the boy will be ok.

This news prompted me to email my elected officials and ask them to do something about making our roads safe for everyone.

Fingers crossed the kid recovers quickly

East Lothian bike accident boy wakes from coma

[His Mother] has called for East Lothian Council to look at safety measures on the road where the accident happened. “It is just a quiet country lane. I would like it to get a speed bump or ramp to make it a bit safer.”

The driver of the van involved in the accident has been helping police with their inquiries.

    Glad they're making progress.

I commute out of Pencaitland and the worst part of the journey by far are the country roads around the village. Almost every day I'm on them something really ropey happens.
I don't know - lots of people seem to drive on them at 60mph with the assumption they'll get past you without slowing down, and they don't seem to adjust that assumption even when they can't see round an oncoming bend or if something's coming the other way.
    Horrible cycling.

I would have quit by now if it wasn't for the railway path.

(Disclaimer - this may be completely unrelated to the reasons for the referenced accident)

"An East Lothian boy, seriously hurt in a road accident two months ago, has defied medics by returning to school."

That's great news. The limit on the B6363 should be reduced to 30mph at the point where it passes through the small-holdings. And the road should be resurfaced.
