Putting Videos of Number Plates Online

  1. Stream of consciousness from a thought I had last night...

Whenever I put a video of bad driving online (which is thankfully infrequently) I always get someone asking me to put the number plate into the header and body text so that someone searching for it could find it.

Now I never do. It's not for any other reason than I don't want to (and no, putting a number plate online in such a video does not breach data protection laws, it's not 'sensitive personal information', and for one thing it's something that's permanently displayed in public).

Anyway, I got to wondering after seeing a news report on the top three driver gripes (clearly they didn't ask about cyclists as they were tailgating, using a mobile phone while driving, and lane hogging). They showed a video of a white van man tailgating (an unmarked police car - snigger) and blanked out the number plate. And in a moment I had an unexpected instant of clarity.

What if the car or van gets sold? I'll watch videos of poor driving from a couple of years back, but hey, within a month that car could be sold on to someone else. That may no longer be a car to look out for and worry about. That driver may not be justified the glowering looks of cyclists who have remembered the make, model, and number plate.

I'm going to continue not putting the plate in the titles of videos (equally if it's visible in the video I'm not going to go to lengths to obscure it).

Then again, someone looking to purchase a vehicle second-hand might Google the registration, see the owner's road-attitude and decline to make a purchase from such a specimen.

What about taxi numbers, which might be shared between several drivers working the cab in shifts?

And of course the original person who committed the poor driving might have sold it on to someone who was unaware of the video and then when they come to sell it, having driven perfectly, find people declining to buy because it was featured in a video from just before he bought it.

Similarly with taxi numbers really. I don't personally memorise taxi numbers from videos and check them against who comes to the door - but as you say, could be a completely different driver anyway...

It's just information. As we've seen just from the last couple of posts, it might be used as a force of good or of evil.

We're having a lot of trade quotes done just now. Say I recognize one of them from a video of dangerous driving and send him packing (which I would) - did I just make things better because he'll see the error of his ways, or make matters worse (dangerous prejudice against cyclists is reinforced)?

Should I conciously prefer to hire dangerous white van drivers to avoid the risk of making things worse for other cyclists then?

n-order effects. Life is too short sometimes!

Or (devil's advocate) would it be best to find out if the driver in the video is still with the company and if he is see what the response of the company is to the video and then make the decision.

As you say, life's too short, but you also admit you would act on the video evidence without knowing the driver in the video was still on the scene and reflecting on the company...
