Is Froome doing anything that he wasn't capable of doing last year?

Interesting bit of speculation from the Eurosport commentators that Wiggo might look to sign to BMC next year if, as expected, Froome becomes Sky's key rider, and BMC drops Cadel.

    3 facts about today:
    - @1t4i rocks
    - had a 2nd doping control in the hotel
    - still can't believe all this
    - called my parents, they're drunk

Rolland got a sharp blast on a horn from a race official to warn him not to hold on to his team car and hitch a lift - one of his mechanics was out with the magic spanner, pretending to fix a problem on his bike but the commissaire was having none of that.

Yes, Chris Froome is still the race leader but his grip on the yellow jersey looks a lot less secure at the start of stage 14 than it did 24 hours ago.

Bastille Day means big French motivation. Mont Ventoux means big climber motivation. All these things mean a grim day for sprinters

Voeckler to go for glory on Bastille Day?

The Bastille Day celebrations are a very big reason why the Phil Cool of cycling, aka the gurning, grimacing great entertainer Tommy Voeckler would like to shine today - this is a day that traditionally sees French riders go for glory.
But there is another reason why French riders are desperate for some success. We have had four German stage wins at this year's Tour, three British, two Australian and one apiece for Belgium, Slovakia, Ireland and Italy.
None for France though. Not yet, anyway.

Stage 15: The story so far
If you're just joining us, here's where we are at. The riders are more than halfway through the longest stage of this year's Tour de France, which will have a potentially epic mountain-top finish on top of Mont Ventoux.

There are nine men in a break but their advantage is down to two minutes and 50 seconds (after being above six minutes earlier) with 104km of the 242km remaining. The riders will hit the bottom of Mont Ventoux and climb 21km to the finish - that is is when the fireworks will happen, with attacks expected from the men at the top of the general classification. All eyes will be on British race leader Chris Froome and his rivals, who may well be going for the glory of the stage win on Bastille Day too.

Matt Slater, BBC sports news reporter on Mont Ventoux
"If Sylvain Chavanel, or any other son of Gaul, wins today, Mont Ventoux might erupt. Half of Provence has crammed onto the Bald Mountain. There are camper vans, picnic tables, tents, inflatable sofas, flags, bikes, lots of bikes, and thousands of spectators every inch of the way up this 21km climb. It took us two hours to do it in our van this morning, such was the procession of amateur cyclists, Tour officials and drunk men in fancy dress. It's a national holiday on an iconic mountain, what did we expect?
"I tell you what these fans expect, though, and that's an epic. I think they're about to get one. One last thing, it's actually got cooler at the top. Sweatshirt weather, not the usual vest, then."

Froome did the business then. Also saw The Devil in yellow and a man running with a stuffed deer? Another exciting stage of a great tour so far.

It was a wild boar, not a deer.

    Great performance from Froome.

Yes, the commentators said wild boar but looked too small and cuddly?

Well there were a Lot of people on ventoux. I rode to the top on Saturday afternoon with an army of freds and mamils. It felt so good to reach the top. It is certainly a big hill..... 20 km of climbing .....saw the peloton from the col du Madeleine. Team sky were 2 minutes behind the lead at that point but going like the clappers. What a great sight. currently camped up.on a mountain above Chorges for the time trial on Wednesday. Sadly gonna have to give up on Alpe d'huez as it would be traffic chaos to meet the ferry home....... vive la tour.

Nice one Bodna. I read 500,000 on ventoux but would accept 50,000

Team Sky look set for a long day of hard toil back in the peloton. Geraint Thomas is at the head of the field churning out the hard miles with his team-mates tucked in behind.

I saw Kraftwerk perform Tour de France last Friday - nothing to do with this thread, just thought I'd brag.

(I am enjoying this years TdF - there have been some really good stages, and some wonderful upsets)

All I can really say of today's race is "Awww, di dums"

Contador going too fast for poor Froome, attacking on a descent, awww, bad Contador.

Poor Contador being attacked by Quintana when he fell off, awwww, bad Quintana. Contador obviously has a short memory!

Very enjoyable so far, but sadly marred by the repeated appearances of polka dot shorts. They are bad enough when worn by the rightful owner of the jersey but when worn as they were yesterday by the rider in 3rd place, well that's just unacceptable.

@Charterhall, the rightful wearer of the polka dots prefers his yellow top... (you probably know this...)

It's the shorts that are causing the controversy -

    "

Charlie says: "The polka dot shorts are horrific! I remember the race organisers fining the likes of Mario Cippolini for wearing yellow shorts (shoes, glasses, gloves, helmet.....) - maybe it's time to reintroduce something similar.

It's OK, disregard the link I posted a few days ago, and the twitter chatter that Froome is a dope cheat, he isn't, at least according to this Blog....

    http://alex-cycle.blogspot.co.uk/2013/07/the-elusive-dopeometer.html?m=1

It ALL makes for interesting reading though, a really fascinating subject (well I think so).

So, all 177 riders are spread out on the slopes of L'Alpe d'Huez. There are 60km to go... and most of it is uphill.

Shame for Froome to taint what seems an inevitable victory with what was effectively a professional foul. Would've been pleasing, if unrealistic, to see a more dramatic time penalty.

Must have been psychological as take a little while to kick in these gels? He also atacked too early so he didn't play the stage right and still got away with it. To or row should be good too.

Porte hauled him up again and quite ironic that porte had to be reeled in for Froome same as Froome had to come back for Bradley
