"When all relevant ICD-10 codes are used, fatalities by time spent travelling vary within similar ranges for walking, cycling and driving. Risks for drivers were highest in youth and fell with age, while for pedestrians and cyclists, risks increased with age. For the young, especially males, cycling is safer than driving."

{Edit, I now see that road.cc covered this early in the year, so we may already have discussed. apols if flogging dead horse. I'd not looked at the actual article previously)

For the young, especially males, cycling is safer than driving.

This sentence requires the word "statistically" sharply inserted up its back end.

Does that mean I'm twice as likely to get killed cycling to work, as I would driving?

Drive to work: 25 miles, ~1hr
Cycle to work: 25 miles, ~2hrs.
    Walk to work: 25 miles, ~6hrs. <<< eek :(

Doesn't really take into account distance, the 'death per km/mile travelled' is a better statistic.

Death per km makes cars look safe because of the effect of motorways which are very safe per km.

Perhaps a better option would be per km but exclude motorways.
