I have replaced my mudguard again, but now the lug on the frame where the mudguard attaches to the chainstay/seatstay junction appears to be threaded. The standard hex bolt or allen bolt?? ;o) goes in butwon't tighten and instead just spins as it nips up. This is the cassette side so I can't just pop on an M5 bolt and Aircraft nut as it interferes with the chain when its on the smallest cassette cog.

What is the standard size for these please? Is it M5? If so, could anyone lend me an M6 tap please? I'll then source an M5 allen bolt (suggestions welcome) to hold the mudguard strut on tight.

    Many thanks,

    Dave C

If the bolt head is flat enough you might get away with putting it through backwards. Ie take the wheel out, put the bolt in so the head is on the inside of the frame and the nut on the outside at the guard stay loop.

The standard size is M5. If the threads are damaged so an M5 screw gets jammed, then running a tap through is a good way to fix it.

Have you tried putting an M5 screw (e.g. one from your water bottle bosses) into the hole? If it gets stuck, then use a tap, but if it is loose in the hole you will need to go up a size or find a slim enough nut that it doesn't catch the chain (or try allebong's suggestion).

Oh so the standard size IS M5? So I guess I need an M6 tap? Don't really want to buy one just for this small job.

    Edited the title, cheers

Dave, give me a shout if you need the tap itself; I have one. Actually, B&Q does a nice M4/M5/M6/M8 set, but the wrench is made of cheese.

Oh cheers Arellcat, I knew you'd come up with the info I needed!! Many thanks :Ox At a fraction over a tenner I will just buy the set. I can pick up a tap wrench (???) at the car boot sale locally, they always have loads of useful junk! Its the Taps I wanted new! Cheers, Dave C
