    Hi,

I was wondering if anyone can help, I'm going to be travelling the 77 route and I noticed at Dunkeld the route seems to go offroad next to the Hilton Dunkeld, does anyone know if you can potentially ride it on a road bike or if it is better just to stay on the A9?

    Thanks

Hi Spud, this is mostly paved and then a wee bit of hard packed mud with small stones from memory - I have cycled it s few times it is lovely. Have seen quite a few riding road bikes on this stretch without difficulty. The A9 is horrendous at this point - my wife says it it dual carriageway and that you are not allowed to cycle on it, but I'm not sure if this is correct.
    Hope this helps.

I did it a couple of weeks ago and the bit around the hotel should be fine on a road bike. I was on 28s (Marathon Plus) and my mate was on what looked like 32s. You shouldn't have any problems. Certainly better than the A9, which has no positive features at all.

The bit by the Hilton is rideable by road bike and definitely the route to take. Although it is legal to ride on the A9, I would strongly urge you not to.

The Hilton route will take you under the A9 where you cross the Tay, the route to Logierait is well signed.
There are fine views over the Tummel Valley as you approach Pitlochry.

    Enjoy.

    Cheers

I regularly drive on this stretch of the A9,its not something I would want to cycle, as a cyclist I give (the ever increasing number)cyclists plenty room, but see lots who don't give a damn ! Seen lots of people on recently, and also, check for the Beaully (!) to Denny works which seem to have a habit of parking big trucks, diggers and even helicopters across the cycle tracks ! Very pleasan tweather the last couple of days, look out for the asda lorry with a jealous looking driver.... ittle be me !

At dunkeld you can endure the A9 for short spell then take the left turn that goes to Dalguise as a route to Pitlochry that will be nice.

The other option is to ignore the 76 at the Hilton in Dunkeld and go straight on the minor road that rejoins the A9 a few miles to the north (where you can pick up the path along the A9 again).

However, you're missing out on probably the most interesting bit of the ride, where the 77 comes away from the A9 corridor...

Cheers for the replies guys - alas I'd posted a bit late and had already set out and eventually did ride the A9 - VERY SCARY! I think my average speed was the highest it was. The rest of the 77 and the 7 was lovely - a good 6hr ride from Pitlochry to Edinburgh!

Good to know about the Hilton Route though -

There should be a website which says which bits of the cycle paths are suitable for Road/Hybrid/MTB etc

    anyone know if one exists?

You can cycle from Pitlochry to Blairgowrie and then south through Perth, and finally up Glen Farg and south through Milntorpe and Kinross.

Alternatively you can cycle to Tummel Bridge and then south to Aberfeldy and then onto Crieff and then through Auchterarder and then Dunfermline. Either way is a hill fest :O) and much more preferable to me than the A9 south, mixing it with HUGE lorries and fast cars!

But then I'm just a Grimping junkie.

Pitlochry to Blairgowrie I assume you mean the A924 via Kirkmichael? That looks like a massive hill :)

The route I took - the bit south from Pitlochry is actually quite nice avoiding the A9 and the only A9 bit was the Dunkeld 1km section - I'd highly recommend the bit Pitlochry to Logierait and even the B road that takes you to the Dunkeld section. After Dunkeld the roads went to Bankfoot were OK and even South of that (Until I nearly got taken out by a Peleton at Almondbank!)

Perth to Glenfarg via some of the Kinross Sportive route was a bit mental though I've heard Dunning Hill would have been better, I went over via Rossie Ochil - THAT Was a suffer fest of a climb! many false summits!

There's another off road option here from Dunkeld to Pitlochry via Mill Dam / Loch Ordie / Loch Broom etc but it is off the beaten track, somewhat.

Did you click o the Grimping link?? :O)

Not sure which hill Rossie Ochil is, but I have climbed both Dunning common and the road south from Dron, which are both lovely (and steep).

Perhaps someone should pop up a RidewithGPS route link to the quiestest route south on the A9 for A9 virgins?
