    http://www.scotsman.com/news/transport/cyclist-s-leg-crushed-by-lorry-1-2999233

"AN elderly cyclist has been left in a serious condition after his leg was crushed in a horror collision with a lorry.

Firefighters had to use air-bags to free the 79-year-old from underneath the HGV following the crash."

    Not good.

I wonder if by any chance this featured a tipper lorry

The injured man is my pals's Dad. I've know the family for many years and they're still all in shock. He was a very active man all his life and cycled at least four times a week, and swam twice weekly.

He is still in an induced coma, and will be utterly devasted when he comes out of it.

My thoughts are with him and his family.

What a fantastic job by the trained nurse who came upon the scene though. Having the presence of mind to do something so practical, in a situation like that says so much about her.

    Cheers
    Colin

Horrible to hear and of course thoughts go out to the cyclists family. Good on the Nurse for doing all she could too.

I note that there is no mention of what happened at all. The cyclist was "in very good physical condition" and "remained conscious throughout" Doesn't sound like he would have been an inexperienced chat in the slightest. Hope there were witnesses and the truth is told.

I have a HGV licence and drove as a temporary HGV driver for a few of years in the 1990s when I was a student as a summer job. I've drivern and delivered pretty much everything you could think off excluding some hazardous substances (though I did have a HAZMAT licence for a while).

My experience of 8 wheel tipper lorrys was thus:

Its a monotinous job, generally they drive between two points picking up and off loading. I was paid by the hour (agency work), but I get the feeling some were paid by the number of loads. There were always a few drivers who were first in and last out, getting more loads than me and others. The job was boring as heck as it was being loaded at one point, then driving along the same route to tipp the load at the other end. I did it for a week and was bored stiff so was happy to have a change on the next job. I imagine the perminant drivers doing this week in, week out get to know the roads and route very well and don't pay as much attention to the road as they could/should.

I'm not excusing what may or may not have happened as far as blame, as I know nothing of this sad incident but hope to shed light on what being a tipper driver is like.

Perhaps if any investigating officer knew this, they may question the driver differently? I don't know, I'm no an investigating officer.

It turns out that the man who died was a founding member of Edinburgh Triathletes...

I didn't know him, and it is just a horrible co-incidence that two people associated with the club have died in such similar circumstances in such a short space of time.

Many condolences to Colin's friend, and the rest of this man's family and friends.

LCC are doing another flash ride in London tomorrow after the death of another cyclist this morning.

    http://lcc.org.uk/articles/lcc-organises-second-protest-ride-after-third-cyclist-killed-in-three-weeks-on-street-without-dedicated-space-for-cycling

My question - do we need to do one in Scotland at the same time? Is there any way it could be pulled together at such short notice?

I think a problem would be who / what to flashmob (by which I mean, where). A flashmob out in Winchburgh would, with the best of intentions, probably be largely ineffective and un-noticed.

But then do you move the "target" to somewhere like the parliament or government offices? It's much easier and more effective for a flashmob to work in a busy city, like London (or even Edinburgh) where it can be seen and will have a disruptive effect for impact.

Perhaps any POP mailinglists, could be used. Although this might be against any agreement made at time of signing up?

Could POP tweet something? How secretive does this need to be?

@coxy, i think we could get word out, but wonder if we could get turnout. on Friday when London did their ride, I strongly felt like we should too. but then concluded we would be unlikely to get people out. I hope I'm wrong, but that's my sense at the moment.

Targets: government office where we did the walking/cycling budget protest last year?

It wouldn't have to be secret - we could definitely tweet it out through POP and anywhere else, but as SRD says, we'd need to be sure to get the turnout. It's a shame in a way that LCC went for tomorrow, rather than Friday as that would have given it more time to build

    <pedantic rant>
Edinburgh Triathletes is not a bike club (although we do cycle). It is not an athletics club (although we do run). It is a triathlon club. Is that too difficult?
