Pedestrians are fragile, look out for them when driving or cycling - follow the Nice Way Code

wc "... motorists who are holding up society ..."
Chambers Dictionary: hold something up 1 to support it. 2 to delay or hinder it. See also hold-up (1 a delay or setback. 2 an attack with a view to robbery.)

They've really surpassed themselves with the middle finger advert.

This anti-cycling propaganda - for there is no other way to describe it - is paid for by active travel budget !

I have to assume that Transport Scotland signed off on the campaign material having actually seen it first.

Can't quite bring myself to believe there is a deliberate political war against active travel, but its hard to imagine them getting it any more wrongheaded than this.

Marco Biagi is my MSP too - I keep meaning to email him through the "write to them" site - I can't decide wheter to start off with something about "i know you've heard a lot about this already, here's another one..." or just plough straight in with "why is money being spent on this rubbish?"

I've complained to the ASA about the middle finger advert.

@fimm, methinks the latter, otherwise he'll suspect collusion with other petitioners...

Call into the Bike Station in Glasgow for your copy of the new @nicewaycode guide book with road tips n hints, they're the talk of the town!

Not sure if Glasgow and Edinburgh versions of BS have same view.

@danoh1 Hi Dan. I think it would be even better if the distance was clearly stated. What does @nicewaycode say?

The Niceway Code is clearly invalidating my angry response by telling me that I should tolerate whatever it is drivers, the dominant group in society, dish out. They can act in ways that endanger my life but being rude back just isn’t nice and I shouldn’t do it. I should be polite. The Niceway Code is attempting to police my conduct, to shut me up, to take away the one defence I do have when drivers threaten me and that’s to be thoroughly impolite back. Frankly I think a one-fingered salute is a pretty minor response to imminent death but according to NWC it is ‘wrong’.

@Downfader @CTC_Cyclists @nicewaycode It's not condescending as it's addressed to offenders who don't appear to know better.

    "Does anyone like this campaign?"

Most positive response I've seen so far:

    @danoh1
Excellent advertising campaign. Thoroughly agree with this @nicewaycode ow.ly/i/2UGzg - 19 Aug

Booklet looks to be of the usual high quality we have come to expect of the niceway code ;)

Hi @nicewaycode can you remind your partner @firstscotland that their drivers should give me 1.5 space when over taking....1/2

    @nicewaycode
@urbaneprofessor Our code advises that drivers should give same space to a cyclist as they do when overtaking a car - http://t.co/9a0bxFyv0V

Right, so not 1.5m of space then NWC? Just a slightly vague 'as much space as a car'. Which is 'your' code is it? Isn't that just what the 'HIGHWAY' Code states?

  14. Apologies if this has been asked/raised before and for my laziness in not reading back through the thread.

I notice one of the NWC partners/members is the Bike Station. Have they responded to the public reaction/stooshie to NWC, or indeed anyones specific questions to them?

I may contact them if no one else here has.

I presume you mean the BS in Edinburgh?

I think they have been silent so far.

Ask them for a copy of the NWC booklet.

Glasgow BS seems quite enthusiastic about it all.

I'd like to make a comment on the NWC Facebook site. However the "slideshare" app want access to my personal info such as friends etc. What I would have said is this:

"I really don't like this campaign. It's small minded and it makes me embarrassed to live in Scotland. If the campaign was meant to improve the situation, why wasn't some proper research done? There's plenty of it around to review"

The Bike Station! The CTC I could understand but I'm shocked that the Bike Station could put its name to this shambles. I thought it was a decent pro-cycling organisation, not a supporter of ignorant anti-cycling drivel.

"I'm shocked that the Bike Station could put its name to this shambles"

I believe they were shown some of the materials and strongly advised that they should be altered.

I'm just disappointed that the organisation is maintaining an undignified silence -

    like CTC, Sustrans etc.

Bike Station are members of Cycling Scotland, are they not? Might explain the ambiguity...

    http://www.cyclingscotland.org/partners/members

Mind you, Spokes are members too, as are CTC (Scotland and UK). Haven't seen Spokes endorsing the campaign...

Great news for the Scottish economy! Oh, wait - the Scottish Roads Partnership is made up of Ferrovail Agroman (Spanish) and Lagan Construction (Northern Irish)

At least the price is fixed at £415m. Oh, wait - it isn't.

At least it isn't one of those nasty PFI projects. Oh, wait - non-profit distributing is just another name for PFI.

At least...well, I think you get the picture.

I wonder what the ASA complaint was about - I've raised one regarding the print obscenity, but not had a response.
