That is totally bogus, dude!
Can you put the Bill & Ted vid up there too?
CityCyclingEdinburgh was launched on the 27th of October 2009 as "an experiment".
IT’S TRUE!
CCE is 15years old!
Well done to ALL posters
It soon became useful and entertaining. There are regular posters, people who add useful info occasionally and plenty more who drop by to watch. That's fine. If you want to add news/comments it's easy to register and become a member.
RULES No personal insults. No swearing.
That is totally bogus, dude!
Can you put the Bill & Ted vid up there too?
Being serious for a moment, if you look at the minimal content that the PRs have dredged up to plonk on the 'Nice Way' blog, it is all about hectoring vulnerable road users. It targets cyclists and pedestrians. The only attempt at 'balance' is to post the 'War On The Roads' hysteria from the Beeb.
Hmm, something seems to be missing here? Oh yeah, the links laying into drivers for bad behaviour! Maybe they couldn't find any? Or maybe it just smacks of finger wagging at vulnerable road users.
"Now look here, if you cyclists and pedestrians had a little bit more respect and obeyed the rules of the road, then drivers wouldn't get angry and be provoked into killing or maiming you! So behave, be nice, and we'll sorry they'll be nice back. Okay? Got that?"
"if you cyclists and pedestrians had a little bit more respect and obeyed the rules of the road, then drivers wouldn't get angry"
Yes.
This was shown to the last All Party Cycling Group at Holyrood with a fairly sceptical/hostile reception.
One cycle group person used the words "victim blaming".
I'm waiting to see if they have dropped the slogan "See Bike, Think Horse"
If I was in charge of a £400k project I'd be embarrassed/annoyed by the use of a WordPress.com hosted web site.
I use them a lot, they are actually really good and FREE. But not really the correct thing for a Government campaign to demonstrate its 'authority'.
Oh look someone has noticed -

OOPS! THAT PAGE CAN’T BE FOUND.
It looks like nothing was found at this location. Maybe try one of the links below or a search?
Nothing Found
Apologies, but no results were found for the requested archive. Perhaps searching will help find a related post.

So instead of putting some useful copy they've just deleted the page.
Classy.
In fairness, it must take AGES to get copy approval to post onto such a high quality site. Perhaps the approving intern has gone home for the day...
this is a fun thing to watch https://twitter.com/search/realtime?q=%40nicewaycode&src=typd
Your right btw, 400k and a wordpress page? I think the campaign Manager is on his way to Mexico...

Mixed comments!
I wonder how they propose evaluating this "groundbreaking" approach to demonstrate if it is a wise investment of money and increases road safety? Will they compare stats before and after, or will they perhaps ask people if they had a nicer time on the road...
"I wonder how they propose evaluating this "groundbreaking" approach"
Indeed.
Even if it works (we might all be wrong...) it is likely to be so vague and unmeasurable.
"Were you more careful when seeing cyclists after you'd seen the ads?"
"Oh yes."
"Oh yes."
All I see in my mind's eye is a cartoon bulldog nodding his head, and something about insurance. Now that's an effective marketing strategy, not some two-bit free website for a campaign that, as chdot mentioned and I before, is significantly unmeasureable.
I was 'nice' to all my fellow road users today. So KB can tell me why I was overtaken and cut up halfway around the roundabout on the Calder Road by someone too impatient to wait five seconds.
I was 'nice' to all my fellow road users today. So KB can tell me why I had to chance myself to get across Slateford Road because of badly arranged roadworks that merely slow down the traffic that's already slowing down.
I was 'nice' to all my fellow road users today. So KB can tell me why after doing my best to reach the top of Braid Road and pulling in to the kerb to let five cars go past, because their journeys were obviously more important than mine, none of the five motioned a thank-you to me.

Mr Brown said: "The Nice Way Code campaign seeks to build a culture of tolerance and patience between cyclists, motorists, pedestrians and all other road users across Scotland.
"While the numbers of road casualties in Scotland are at their lowest ever level, there is still simply no room for complacency.
"
zero positive comments on twitter so far....
...we are not complacent...
I am sick of hearing this weasel phrase. Of course you're not complacent, people are dying out there. But what are you actually achieving while not being complacent?
So we have an expensive campaign to ask, more or less, motorists to be nice to cyclists. Not plead, or even enforce, but ask. Meanwhile we see the government pouring more money than any of us can possibly imagine into more roads, to carry more traffic, to cause more accidents. We'll need another 'nice' campaign in about 10 years' time.
Have the comments from the Facebook page been removed? I can't find the one I made earlier.
Ignore that - found it.
If they evaluate it the way they evaluate most road safety campaigns, they will ask a sample of road users if they are aware of the campaign, what the message was, and then if they have changed their behaviour. If they're being really rigorous, they'll survey before and after the campaign to see if attitudes and behaviour have changed.
In fairness, I expect most of the £400k has gone on the TV adverts, not the website, which has the look of something bodged together by an intern in a hurry.
A whois reveals:
Domain Name: NICEWAYCODE.COM
Registrant: Newhaven Agency
They were involved with Edfoc and other cycling and road safety campaigns.
According to the website they recently "won" the Cycling Scotland Account.
Fortunately the cameras were rolling at Cycling Scotland HQ when they brainstormed this idea (mildly sweary at 01:40 - not Tuckerstrength though)
Yes Newhaven.
Recently involved in another Road Safety campaign -
Mentioned on https://www.twitter.com/NewhavenAgency
Their latest isn't...
I just can't look at that website without laughing and thinking surely they are having us on? Someone decided the cycling campaigners needed a good laugh... "Let's all get along... Helping to make the roads a nicer place" even the use of the word nice, surely no sensible pr/marketing person would use *nice* to promote anything!
I know those guys (or rather knew them a few years ago). Frankly surprised at this guff they are putting out.
The whole thing is well-meaning but fundamentally misguided and inept!
Will the posters/TV spots be any better I wonder?
Certainly someone's having a laugh. From the FB page: "In the meantime, have a happy Monday." Now come on! There's a pop culture reference if ever I spied it.
Maybe this is one of those campaigns where the client insisted on using their crap slogan, and the agency just takes the money and designs the publicity through gritted teeth, adding in wee subversive flourishes that the client is too thick to spot?
One explanation for the whole thing seeming like a total spoof.....or it could be "ironic in a non-ironic way". Y'know, like the current ads for a well known brand of Bourbon whiskey, featuring a fat guy on the beach.
Oh my flipping word. Speaking as a PR person that is a pile of Shite. (Sorry to break the rule, but with an e on the end it's not offensive). There's nothing wrong with a be nice campaign, but this execution is rubbish.
It's also not unique or groundbreaking, it's been done here in a more intelligent and well resourced manner with Drivesocial.co.nz
And quite a nice ad stressing the people not cars line(IMHO).
But then again, the NZTA does generally have great ads, categorising people as 'bloody idiots' or 'legends'.

I'm a Scot and cyclist, now living in exile in New York City. I've always been very polite to other road users but have suffered regular abuse over the years from motorists: http://invisiblevisibleman.blogspot.com/2012/01/why-some-people-get-angry-with-cyclists.html Your campaign seems to be telling motorists that cyclists need to earn their respect. The truth is that motorists need to start obeying the rules and stop killing so many cyclists. Why doesn't your campaign just say that?
