Cameras worn by cyclists to highlight the daily dangers they face from motorists on Britain's roads are fuelling tensions between car and bike users, a new study argues.

Hm. So the 'behavioural expert' thinks cyclists should ditch the lycra and ride slowly like they do in Copenhagen? Then we won't 'antagonise' the motorists? Oh, and cyclists shouldn't be 'aggressive' by using helmet cams.

Basically, if we behave and dress like ordinary pedestrians, then we'll all be able to cycle wherever we like and motorists will see us, be nice to us, give plenty of space and won't be antagonised by any sporty looking 'agression'.

Did the 'behavioral expert' then go on to lecture those uppity black folks in the southern USA for 'anagonising' the white folks by demanding their civil rights? Is he next coming to Edinburgh to tell Scots not to 'antagonise' the English by getting all 'agressive' and debating independence?

I rode in ordinary clothes. I seem to remember a driver telling me "if you don't value your life, go and jump off a bridge, but don't go riding bikes when there are cars about". I thought this was because this person was dangerously arrogant, but I now realise it was either a figment of my imagination or the fault of those nasty aggressive sporty cyclists. The scales have fallen from my eyes! A warm thank-you to progressive cycling-friendly New Zealand for this insight!

It seems our 'behavioural expert' is instead a Design Ethnographer with an interest in computer games and social networks. Here's his research project on interactions between commuters: http://playingintraffic.co/

I'd say it's highly likely he was misquoted or his coments were taken out of context to stoke controversy. Of course, that rarely happens in media reporting in the UK!

Hmmm, researcher mistakes cause for effect - Copenhagen cyclists don't wear Lycra or cameras, so that must be why it's a pleasure to cycle there (allegedly, not been myself, but perhaps next year!).

<shrug> I'm a one man destroyer of cycling culture...

I think the most constructive thing I can do with Mr Chan's "research" is write some instructions showing the optimal method of shaping the paper and telling him where to put it.

    Just for balance of course...

Where did they find those car free roads?

Now what does that remind me of?!

From a no sound viewing, it seems to be a wry and amusing ad suggesting that drivers pass cyclists on the road in the same way (both speed and space given)as they would a horse. Which is a nice sentiment.

The main stand out for a government-backed ad is that one of the cyclists featured is a lady on a bike. She is wearing normal clothes and (whisper it) no h*****.

    All very *nice*.

I do hope that there's an ad about nice motorists going through red lights as well. Just for balance.

"See cyclist, think horse". Oh, my sides! I'm assuming the people carrying out the "research" identified the fact that most cyclists are commuting to work on extremely busy urban roads and this message makes no sense in this situation. I'm not sure how many drivers have ever passed a horse.

"Don't give cyclists a bad name". Oh no - I've been made responsible for the good name of every cyclist in Scotland! How did that happen?

Anyway, regardless of the content of these adverts I think the rationale for this campaign has been well and truly undermined by commenters more eloquent than me over the past week.

Well, they didn't make me utterly furious. So that's something.

See cyclist, think horse. Yes, very funny. Punnery on a grand scale. There's a kids' sketch show called Gigglebiz. Ewan and Ellen enjoy it. It's the same kind of comedy as that.

I can imagine the wags in their hot hatches getting ready with their shouts of 'pony arse' already.

Does the teacher in the "Don't give cyclists a bad name" advert say "WOP WOP WOP" as in the racial slur for italians......

So when I am approaching a slow moving cyclist, should I hang back and shout cyclist (as per instructions on horse passing) before passing.

As far as I'm able to get into the mindset of someone who wouldn't give cyclists enough room I think the horse one probably works. Cyclists = unpredictable, weird, not-quite-human but ultimately non-threatening and deserving of our sympathy.

Yep - I'd prefer to be treated like a horse on the road rather than as a pesky fly as seems to be the case now

Hmmm, can't say I'm too annoyed by them. Humurous and light, yes, but maybe effective.

The first shows normal cyclists (as in, not lycra-clad) riding in primary, and asking drivers to treat them with repsect (like you would a horse)

The second one is less funny (the joke's just not very good) but still shows normal cyclists. It asks us not to jump red, because it gives all cyclists a bad name.

"Don't give cyclists a bad name"

    ffs, that's lame.

that's not balanced, they aren't calling out motorists who speed or jump reds.

the motorist in the horse advert isn't referred to as a motorist representing a group, he's just seen as a normal everyday person.

    they are perpetuating the problem.

this country is stupid and backward.

Maybe effective? You're joking, right? How?

For a start, horse assumes that drivers behave themselves around horses. A quick google suggests not. This, for example,

COUNCIL TROT OUT HORSE SENSE FOR DRIVERS

So we need them to do a bit better than treat us like horses.

But we need to work out what the mechanics are for this to actually impact on driver behaviour. There's no behavioural mechanism. It's comedy.

The whole 'cyclist as horse' idea was just ripped off from Belleville Rendezvous, which was far funnier.

The ads are in the same vein as the recent 'listen to your legs' campaign. Just not as good as that. Will they work? Do the kinds of road users they're trying to reach actually watch much telly?

Are drivers allowed to treat cyclists differently if they're not 'normal', and have lycra and a helmet on?
