Why can't bikes turn left onto Princes St from the Mound?

Makes no sense (as does the sign 'Cyclists Dismount")

Is this temporary? Or do we have to fight for this to be restored like the famous missing bike lane on George IV Bridge?

Can understand that a right turn up Mound may be somewhat tricky now.

That's right, another discourage cycling measure, believe Spokes in on the case...

Warrning, NOT about Princes St. -

Was on George Street (after dark). Traffic lights have gone, but there are still Zebra Crossing stripes without Belisha Beacons...

So the right of way is??

re: the mound left turn - have they syncronised the lights so that when the mound traffic goes, pedestrians are walking over on the left?

I'm thinking about the existing 'no right turn' at the bottom (south) end of Middle Meadow Walk - heading south (not that it's really observed).

If not, I can't see why the correct signage isn't 'no left turn - except cyclists'. Why they think it might be safer to stop in the middle of mound traffic, get off and walk instead of just turning is a bit of a head scratcher.

If you look at page 20 of tie's schematics PDF, the left turn is indicated as "For left-turn cyclists to dismount". Obviously this manoeuvre means cyclists would have to re-mount in (potentially very busy) traffic.

Anecdotal evidence on this issue was posted on a different forum recently. Apparently CEC's requirements differed from those set out by tie's designers, and there was the intention for cyclists to be able to turn left with some sort of 'across the footway' and 'behind the pedestrian crossing' arrangement, and a caveat that the building works did not yet reflect CEC's request.

Perhaps a dropped kerb or two and some magic paint will be forthcoming. I suppose keeping the left-turn lane would just encourage motorists?

If only James Craig could have forseen buses and trams and cyclists in the year 2010. He might have built Hanover Street a few more metres to the west.

Non standard bike trials x 2

Took my Furai recumbent with 23mm narrow tyres on 24" rims to see how it worked crossing tracks. Basically I stayed to left hand lane till I wanted to do right turn. I noted how narrow it seemed at RSA and cobbles at tram stop.

At Frederick St (eg) you have to be far left in right hand filter lane (aka the tram lane and the overtaking lane for fast buses). That is to say I found it best to keep well clear of tracks so that you get enough angle to cross both rails safely. If you go between tracks then not much room to move and also bad habit to get into I think. Right of the tracks and you're too close to central reservation.
I know the ASL has been painted over tram lines but maybe not a good place to cycle!

I came back over at Mound and followed the white lines sitting far out in the traffic. Too far left and you may run out of space in front of RSA to turn sharply across tracks.

Darren also tried a Brompton (which could be even more prone to wheel snatch). He stayed on ok but did angle it quite sharply at a low speed to cross rails.

"Mound to Princes Street - an experimental means of allowing cyclist left-turns is hoped to be approved and installed in the next 6-8 weeks. If successful it will be made permanent and similar arrangements installed for left turns at the north ends of Lothian Road and of Dalry Road."

I had a brief look at the works from the back of the bus this afternoon. I would've snapped a photo but it was pouring with rain. Hard to tell at this stage what the end result will be, but the dug up area would make for a generously wide bike path, especially as it's likely to be one-way. I think in practice it'll be a lot like the top of Middle Meadow Walk, where you need to be careful amongst pedestrians when crossing the pavement.
