Much as I like train travel, even been on the sleeper a few times, this does seem like a lot of money.

Is it £100 million over 15 years? It's not at all clear what the figure relates to.

Compared to some trunk road projects in Scotland, this is small beer. I'm glad they're investing in rail though.

No mention of cycle carriage on the sleeper... If only they would invest £100 million in cycling.

I love the sleeper. I always use it in preference to the plane to get to London. Stress-free and comfortable (except the bump at Carstairs when it joins up with the Glasgow one) and it gets me (and my Brompton) into London before 0700.

I hope that all these fripperies don't push the price up, because it's just competitive with air fares now, but if there's a premium to go with en-suite toilets and stuff it's going to make it unaffordable.

I've had a soft spot for the Sleeper since a romantic journey many moons ago with a young lady. We took the Sleeper from Euston to Fort William, which really is one of the great railway journeys of the world.

We tried the sleeper once. It seems like a lovely idea but it didn't work for us. The wheels were loud and apparently square, and we seemed to spend most of the night being shoogled about in the bed. When we arrived and got off the train we staggered along the platform at Euston like dazed and unhappy people who had had virtually no sleep. Maybe we were unlucky? Anyway I'd much rather go on a daytime train.

Incidentally I hate to say it but trains are another thing which seem to be a lot better in the Netherlands. A week or two back I caught a Dutch intercity train and a UK East Coast train on successive days. The East Coast one was comfy inside but the train leapt about all over the place whereas the Dutch one just glided so smoothly that you didn't think about it.
