If anyone tries to argue that it’s essential to have higher speeds on arterial roads make them watch this video.

CityCyclingEdinburgh was launched on the 27th of October 2009 as "an experiment".
IT’S TRUE!
CCE is 15years old!
Well done to ALL posters
It soon became useful and entertaining. There are regular posters, people who add useful info occasionally and plenty more who drop by to watch. That's fine. If you want to add news/comments it's easy to register and become a member.
RULES No personal insults. No swearing.
If anyone tries to argue that it’s essential to have higher speeds on arterial roads make them watch this video.

Anyone know the Lib Dems position on 20mph?
https://twitter.com/hank_chief/status/1072416547623309318?s=19
Hal Osler supports "20mph speed limits and a reduction of traffic on residential streets to reduce noise and increase safety"
https://www.edinburghlibdems.org/inverleith
At a UK level, they certainly used to be in favour: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/politics/liberaldemocrats/9476971/Liberal-Democrats-call-for-20mph-speed-limit-in-residential-areas.html
And at Holyrood, apparently: https://www.holyrood.com/articles/news/mark-ruskell-publishes-member%E2%80%99s-bill-aimed-reducing-speed-limit-20mph-built-areas
Those links seem at odds with Cllr Young's FB response per my tweet above.
Indeed. Councillors can obviously disagree with some of their party's agreed positions, but I'd hope they can provide an explanation for doing so.
As always, it’s the definition of “residential”. Broadly, it seems that councillors think residential means either the street where I live or where my potential voters live. Every other road is arterial.
Response to that DfT report from 20s Plenty:
Generally, a good response from 20s Plenty, however, I'm not sure I agree with:
Surprisingly using median rather than the mean speeds and so damping down the effect of slower speed vehicles.
I'd have thought that the mode (the most common speed) would be the best parameter to use, or perhaps just mentioning all 3 (median, mean & mode) as separate entities.
“
Cutting the speed limit to 20mph in all urban areas could help counter Scotland’s obesity epidemic, a leading child health expert has said.
“
If you do one thing today then please complete the Scottish Parliament survey on making the default urban speed limit in Scotland 20mph. It is very quick to complete:

It would be great if you could try and get others you know (not just cycling fanatics) to do the same - whether through online means or old-fashioned arm twisting.
Bump (took a while for my last post to appear) - please fill in the survey, link above.

Done
me too
Closes Monday.
Was chatting about a briefing I saw on the 20mph speed limit Bill with IWRATS at Cult (also known as January PY) - you can find it here.
Report on the consultation on Mark Ruskell’s draft bill. Entitled driver bingo.

It's amazing.
"Negative impact on human rights:
• Reducing the speed limit would infringe the human rights of drivers, particularly professional drivers, to travel without undue interference from the state"
I look forward to a new breed of sovereign motorists driving tank/plough/bulldozer vehicles straight across the virgin territory of their choice, free from state interference.
In vehicles whose safety is unencumbered by freedom-damaging state imposed standards?
I am quite certain that whoever made that comment is also currently telling people how we won the war and will be better off after Brexit.
And probably thinks Human Rights are on the whole a bad idea. Except wrt to hard working hard pressed motorists.
speaking to *unspecified council member* at *unspecified council meeting* last night, he was describing respondents to a survey about 20mph. He was mentioning that those who were against the 20mph roll out at the start remained against it.
However those who were undecided at the start were more moving towards being proponents of the scheme.
Interesting I thought.
"20mph limits should only apply outside of schools"
Well that's good. It would seem pointless for them to apply inside schools after all.
I'm perplexed by this though, I suspect it's an error in the document rather than an unforeseen positive:
Positive impact on island, remote or rural communities:
...• Reducing vehicle speeds would extend long-distance journey times, making remote areas more difficult to access and have a negative impact on rural businesses.
@acsimpson
<chortle>
No vehicles travelling above 20moh inside schools
Agreed, the islands comment is in the wrong box. Funny though, if you are going to the islands, say from Uig on Skye and you overtake the city link bus then you can relax as the ferry scheduled to leave in a minute or two will wait a good half hour until the bus gets there
Having had the chance to read the full summary. I note that there is a theme between the positives and negatives sections (I am paraphrasing for effect):
Positive themes:
- community
- safety
- sharing space
- environment
- the statement "research shows"
Negative themes:
- me
- me
- My business
- My time
- Road rage
Hearing this morning at the Holyrood.
Apparently Tory MSP Edward Mountain made reference to cyclists doing 40mph around Edinburgh. So evidence being taken on board then.
Well, if they bring in the law to stick it to speeding cyclists, at least we'll have the law
Sir Edward Brian Stanford Mountain, 4th Baronet if you please.
Sir Edward is a former officer in the Blues and Royals and as such highly trained in vehicle to vehicle gunnery. Determination of velocity is a crucial part of calculating offsets and I expect that his 40mph figure is precise. (If not accurate.)
My humblest apologies.
