    http://www.scotsman.com/news/transport/edinburgh-school-streets-to-close-in-safety-plan-1-3056530

"STREETS around schools in Edinburgh would be closed before and after classes to improve safety under plans expected to be approved by city councillors next week.

Pilots would be launched involving up to five schools, with the traffic-free “school streets” aimed at encouraging pupils to walk or cycle."

Problematic for the comment writers - don't like streets being closed; don't like children being driven to school.

A good idea I think. I hope to persuade my primary school to take part in the pilot...

Great idea, and as CB says puts the comment writers in a right old state !

  4. Aye, the commenters are trying desperately to be miserable...

"Why not take the more responsible approach and teach children how to cross roads safely?"

"There is already traffic management measures in this area, and when ever I have passed there have been no issues." The same person goes on to say, "I have called the non emergency number on numerous occasions and been told it would be passed to the neighbourhood cops" which seems a slight contradiction to 'no issues'.

"Just when you think the councilcan't get any stupider - they do."

"Whoever thought up this stupid idea, to close roads during rush hours, must be due for a Council promotion. Road safety classes for the kids and teaching from parents is what is required"

"Will this ban include buses, cycles and trams?"

    Banging on I know....

I couldn't find a Google street view image of a Primary School in Livingston close enough to a school main entrance to demonstrate that the main entrances are no where near the roads.

Probably this in it's self is a good demonstration of there not being any need to close any roads in Livingston, largely because they didn't build any of the schools next to any of the roads.;)

Maybe the next time they build a new school in Edinburgh, they could just, NOT put it next to the road?

Nope, I take that back. This one has a NEW entrance next to the road, even seems to be a new drop off point specially built. The OLD/other main entrance is on the other side, away from the road.

    Deans Primary School

Anyway, back on topic, yes, close the streets. Just better not to have the conflict in the first place was my point.

Wow, another mildly positive road safety idea from the council. Why the sudden rash of slightly good ideas? They're welcome anyway.

I wonder how these streets will be closed for just part of each day? A sign saying "CLOSED"? Comedy rising bollards? Wondering also what happens when a motorist wants to get their parked car out of such a street while it's closed. Does anyone have a link to the plans?

One of the comments does raise a valid point, albeit in a typically EEN way. Instead of clogging up the area in the immediate vicinity of the school, parents will probably just park as close to the "exclusion zone" as they can. I have a nearly daily problem with cars parking over my driveway instead of doing so properly and, if my home is considered outside the zone, I can see this increasing. If it's inside, great, but not for anyone just outside it.

Having said that, as the local school is on an emergency services route (and therefore has no traffic calming other than 20mph signage at the beginning and end of the school day), I can't see it appearing here.

However the plan is implemented - and I'm certainly in favour of the principle - it's ultimately up to the car-driving parents to instil a sea change in attitude towards getting their kids to school.
