I have a 9 month old girl, and will very soon have a second. I'd very much like to take them out in a trailer, once they are a bit older of course - something I always wanted a ride in when I were a lad.

Does anyone have experience with a 2-passenger one? I'm a little worried about the width of them, and whether it's worth forking out mega bucks for it if I'm limited to where I can actually take them safely.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

The EBC trailer was fine for two smaller kids. Width is OK. Motorists are terrified of them so you get bags of room. Issues getting through chicanes and bollards but never had to lift - just careful steering. But it doesn't seem to be available any more. Worth looking for secondhand.

    Hello,

I recently added a not very detailed post here:

    http://citycyclingedinburgh.info/bbpress/topic.php?id=10941

I've had a three year old and a 9 month old in our recently bought second hand chariot and been all over the place with them and I can't recommend it enough - we got really lucky on a second hand one - new ones are prohibitively expensive.

Lots of choices - Burley are good, Chariot are designed brilliantly, and there are some new ones like vantly which are supposedly built in the same factories as Burley outsource to but are their own version (I can't find a reliable source to verify that, but I think it may well be the case).

Good luck with your search - feel free to ask any questions or come and check ours out.

Very helpful guys, thanks alot. To know that motorists fear them is reassuring, I shall definitely look into the ones you have suggested.

Probably won't take them out until the younger one can hold her head up at least, that would be wise.

Only place i know of that an EBC trailer won't fit is the chicanes on the telfer subway (gorgie side). there is a way through, but you have to go t the right (i think), if heading from fountainbridge - gorgie.

I have a weber babyschale for sale that fits in trailers (not perfectly in the EBC one) for babies pre-sitting up and/or not up to sitting up for long. £40.

agree totally. ours almost always just full of groceries/picnic etc, but fab to have because of the way drivers go around.

That's a great thing, never knew you could get those! I'm going to be looking at getting a trailer in the next couple of weeks or so, if you still have it then I'll take it off your hands. My wee girl at the moment is a total Mummy's girl, so this is sort of my thing I'll be able to do with them.

    Hi Dunny,

I would in general agree with the comments regarding the behaviour of drivers around the trailer, but I have had a few close passes which enraged me never the less - I have a mirror which does help to notice these things about to happen as I find shoulder checks with a trailer quite tricky. I find I can easily keep a good line without one but any slight deviation in the line of the bike is exaggerated by the trailer. This may be not very good riding by me of course.

Most manufacturers keep the width to within the standard width of a wheelchair I believe which should make most entrances and gaps between barriers on paths wide enough. The one into the tunnel going to the innocent path is fine for example. Going into and out of the Dalmeny estate you may have to unhook but it is wide enough - just tricky while still connected to the bike.

    Hey Algo,

Yep I've had a read through your post previously, I've decided to get a mirror with it too. I reckon I'll have a good few practice outings to get the feel of it before taking the girls out.

I'm happy enough to negotiate some tricky gaps with it, as everyone agrees kids absolutely love them, that's definitely worth it!

You may find your kids enjoy it so much they won't want to get out when you get home.

Our EBC trailer was sold on to someone in Edinburgh several years ago. So it could still be out there.

Thanks again, you knowledgeable lot, you. I do need to inform Mrs Dunny at some point of my plans, but I'm building a strong case for it thanks to you!
