Traffic Light visibility

I was queuing at traffic lights the other day, in middle of an ASL. I suddenly realised that although the traffic lights were visible to me, I could hardly see which light was illuminated.

Then I read this evening that there are modern traffic lights which are deliberately designed not to be visible at wider angles so that only the intended lane can see it. It was one of the modern-type signals, with the matrix lens (rather than the curved glass one of old) Now this is all well and good if you are back a bit, in a higher vehicle or are approaching the light from a distance. But completely useless if you're placed on a bike where you can't really make out the signal.

I'm now struggling to remember where this was as I commented to my riding companion at the time that the junction design was poor as there was no repeater lights on the far side of the junction and it was very hard to see the changing signal.

Anyone else noticed lights like these?

Aha. It was heading heading east from Lindsay Road into Commercial Street, at the Ocean Terminal junction.

Noticed a few, but not currently able to remember where. There are some where I've had to shuffle back a bit (after naturally heading to where my front wheel is just behind the forwardmost line) and crane sideways to make the light directly visible.

@kapps, that is a bad junction. The low sun has been interfering with me seeing things this week back on our usual route cross, with me heading west at tea time.

I have rolled too far to see lights and had to reverse, doesn't help if car behind follows you into the red box

Also heading east along the same road a little bit earlier, just before the Asda junction, if you're primary in the right-hand lane.

Also the left-turn filter light for heading into East Preston Street from Dalkeith Road requires some stretching and craning to see if you're at the ASL.

Bottom of Esslemont Road, as if heading to Lady Road. Craning required even from mid-way into the ASZ.
