"Andy Murray's Olympic gold post box hit by car in Dunblane"

    ...

"Police Scotland confirmed they attended the "low speed collision" and that the female driver of the car had sustained a minor injury but did not require medical treatment.

It was unclear whether the woman was in the car at the time or not."

So perhaps not entirely sentient then.

"Police name 75-year-old pedestrian killed by quad bike"

"Police have named a 75-year-old woman who died after being struck by a quad bike which mounted the pavement in Glasgow."

I made a complaint to the BBC about this. Got a reply saying that because the story is the subject of an ongoing police investigation, they need to be mindful about appearing to attribute blame. So they have to "set out the facts in a neutral way".

Which would be fair enough, I suppose, if you regularly saw similar stories with language like "Police name person killed by bullet" and "Police have named a person who died after being stabbed by a knife which entered their body in Edinburgh."

If anything that headline makes it sound like the bridge attacked the bus

Bad enough with sentient vehicles. Now we've got aggressive sentient bridges!

It's a whole new type of passive aggressiveness.

Further response regarding above complaint to the BBC:

"...In general though you ask that we should start reporting driving offences in the same way as we do a stabbing. We would simply point out that driving offences are not normally classified by the police or courts as “violent crime” nor is the use of a motor vehicle usually considered in law comparable to the use of a knife or weapon. An exception could be when a driver is charged and convicted of culpable homicide..."

And do they apply this logic to reporting instances where a cyclist and their bike hit a person?

There is a mention of driver and passenger at the foot of the page, however it would seem this is yet another rogue autonomous vehicle.

A police spokeswoman said the driver of the Nissan has been taken to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary as a precaution.

There have been some local reports of traffic being brought to a standstill in the area with only cyclists and pedestrians getting along the road.

For the BBC to routinely describe these deaths as the result of a "crash" is disgusting and unforgiveable in its implications. Neutral reporting my arse.

It's a classic example of unconscious bias. Most people drive, presumably most journalists drive too. Thus they are less willing to believe a driver could be at fault as it could easily have been them - their sympathies are often with the driver rather than the other.

today's bbc reported pedestrian death also has the cops declaring it a "crash", not just the bbc editorial

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-glasgow-west-50972098

"crash".. it can be passed over with a shrug.. gives the impression of an equitable distribution of opposing forces

rather than the horrific reality of a ton of metal hitting vulnerable flesh and bone in a bloody one way kinetic momentum that could never be described as a "crash"

there should be an outcry, this normalisation of road death is unacceptable

"The driver initially failed to stop"

Ahem. That's a hit and run.

Since when have the press (including the BBC) stopped reporting hit and runs as hit and runs?

This morning BBC radio had a spate of 'cars leaving the road / going out of control'. No drivers involved.
