    From the Independent:

Tour de Surrey: Residents up in arms about road closures for cycle races

"They are ill-mannered, they are rude, they abuse the laws of the road and are abusive when you challenge them."

My question: why are you challenging them? On what basis do you have the right to challenge someone because they're using a public road?

Everyone, if you challenge them rudely and abusively enough.

Err?? Closed Road events?? Well if you swaned onto the London Marathon closed road event, and challenged them, I'm sure the runners would be rude abusive and ill mannered? How can riders on a closed road event be breaking the law?? I thought that was the idea of a closed road, NO?

"How can riders on a closed road event be breaking the law??"

Think issue is probably more about 'club riders' 'training'.

Some people just don't like bikes.

Hey never mind the article, read the comments. Heavily cyclist based, and some are even peddents, teaching the othe posters about good English! This will make my lunch time pass very quickly! :O)

This is the same guy who was complaining about the Surrey Classic, isn't it? I'm glad to see he hasn't expired on account of his raised blood pressure since then.

Honestly, some people. He'd find his life would be much more enjoyable if he treated these sorts of things as a spectacle to enjoy (cf, the French, for whom a passing bike race is an excuse to picnic, drink, have fun by the side of the road) rather than something to take umbrage about.

And DaveC, it's "pedants" not "peddents".

    Some people love being indignant

Watch out for it in myself

This forum can often come across that way, but in reality we are actually, hep cats, with a laconic attitude to life, lithe frames, keen intellects, good sense of humour etc

To be fair he does have a point. Since the Olympics there have been numerous sportives in the area, a day long road closure for the London Surrey Classic and this week they are getting another road closure from the ToB. Don't London cyclists and sportive organisers have anywhere else to ride ?

Sportive s love going up Box Hill, it is quite easy and close to London. The other hill down that way Ditchling Beacon is it.? Comes at the end of the cycle to Brighton so seems a bit harder. There is also a London Cambridge route, not many hills. I did the London revolution which did not have closed roads, plenty decent cycling in east and north sectors but probably better west and south.

Those selling sportive places will probably tend to focus for the reasons above (box hill icon, slightly nicer roads) on Surrey. Safer to sell where you have sold before, harder to break new ground to the north and east, the revolution not sold out. The glamping at Windsor race track was quiet, despite bands, fireworks etc

The kids were out en masse in balerno last night watching them close the road for the resurfacing. The indignant guy should Learn to love the bomb as it were. (Dr strangelove)

Not content with just one article about this, the Telegraph writes another:

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/men/active/recreational-cycling/10323653/War-declared-on-the-Lycra-louts-on-wheels.html

Doesn't there come a point where this becomes incitement to violence?

Oh my, the comments on the torygraph are something else. The usual twats who always moan about 'entitlement mentality' and they can't go one sentence without spewing forth about MY ROADS that I PAY FOR with MY ROAD TAX!!!!

They all seem to have a debilitating lycra fetish as well.

Oh my, the comments on the torygraph are something else.

They certainly are. I find it quite scary that there are people driving around in cars who are constantly angry towards cyclists and see us as interlopers invading their roads.

And to have a major newspaper brand all cyclists "lycra louts" feeds their anger and, surely, increases the likelihood that one of these nutters is responsible for killing or seriously injuring a cyclist.

I feel sorry for the indigenous Surrey cyclists, they are on the receiving end of all this aggro thanks to hordes of cyclists from elsewhere and not least the promoters of commercial sportives.

"But these roads are dangerous, with 60mph speed limits and blind corners. I’m terrified there’s going to be an accident.”

Ah, the old "dangerous roads" chestnut.

"She had just run into some cyclists — three abreast — and had tried to overtake, but they wouldn’t move at all."

Ah, the old "get out of my way" chestnut. Even little old ladies are at it!

"We feel it is Londoners coming down, filling up our roads, with no benefit to us whatsoever.”

Ah, the old "they baint from around 'ere" chestnut.

"I am not allowed out of my front door. It’s a cul-de-sac. I can’t go anywhere by car,”

Ah, the old "I have a right to drive anywhere, anytime I like" chestnut.

@charterhall, the Surrey club cyclist chap quoted a lot of sense. They don't grouting large pelotons etc.

They try to exist in harmony with the locals

The story seems to have drifted from organised sportive e forcing the roads to close to cyclists out for weekend jaunts. The cafe at the top of box hill must make some cash from cyclists.

Aye always popular with bikers -

    "

And I've seen you at the corners and cafes it seems
Red hair and black leather, my favorite color scheme
And he pulled her on behind
And down to Box Hill, they did ride

You feel short changed at a Richard Thompson gig if out of his 1000s of songs he doesn't play it

.... And he left her his Vincent to ride

Judging from the crowds out in Surrey yesterday I'm not sure which is the minority group in this case.

Said article has now been covered in the Guardian with a generally much better reception.

Edit: Upon reading the comments further, yes, road tax has made an appearance, along with pavement riding , RLJ etc etc.
