Now, I don't know the area, but to me that looks like exactly the sort of road where there's plenty of space for a proper Dutch-style cycle path if only the will existed and the meagre budget stretched.

I lived in Troon about a decade ago. To my knowledge there was no cycle infrastructure in the town whatsoever. But most of the roads were wide and quiet, and the it had a good sea-front promenade to go along (puts Portobello to shame!).

Apart from the very busiest parts of the town centres, the whole of the Irvine to Ayr stretch was very cycleable, and looking at it on a map now, very compact. It was also very easy to cycle off into the country.

This may just be me with my rose-tinted cycling glasses thinking of my misspent youth, cycling through-out the long summer days and comparing it with the new Haymarket junction in the dark and wet!

Next time I go across to visit family I should take my bike and give the whole area a bit of an explore.

Some people, not me, might feel uncomfortable using the A78/A79 or A77 to get between Troon and Ayr. I never looked for an alternative.

Lived in Ayrshire from '69 to '93 on and off.

Last time I drove in anger was from Ayr to from.

Abandoned the car to my poor father at a junction and we went to a youth club hall to watch a battle of the bands where one very mild outfit distinguished themselves in a bad way by smashing their guitars. The who can smash their guitars and drums, the clash can smash their guitars but some rich spoiled boys from Troon who have played a lame set can pack their guitars back in their cases.

An old school friend had a spring from Ritchie Blackmore's guitar, it would have been Rainbow by that time.

He said that Blackmore swapped guitars just before the smashing thing.

The Move found that TVs were cheaper.

I never understood the smashing thing at all.

I saw the Butthole Surfers at Reading many years ago, they smashed guitars at the start of the set! Happy days
