I think it's a shame light rail for Aberdeen is being presented as an idiotic idea due to the mismnagement of the delivery of the Edinburgh tram system. There is nothing inherently wrong with trams and no reason why they cannot be delivered successfuly in the UK - ask the people of Manchester.
What I do find amusing/depressing is the fact that Aberdeen City are (at least tacitly) admitting that the hugely expensive Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route will not really deal with congestion in the city and that another, probaby very expensive, transport project will be required to help solve that problem.
I wonder what thought was given to developing a very high quality cycle network (even the highest quality network is far cheaper than a light rail system) to help deal with congestion, before going for the big ticket solution.
The old railway line out to Cults/Peterculter is pretty good, I used that a lot when I was working up there. Not convinced the Aberdeen crowd could be convinced to ditch their precious cars though, even for a free tram.
