led by former Rangers owner Sir David Murray’s firm

he spends a lot of money planning and not a lot of money building anything it would seem.

Might not be about building, more about 'change of use' - getting the council, at a stroke, to increase the 'value' of the land for someone else to develop.

Some councillors/officials like 'development' because it is "progress".

Some just want the (potential) Council Tax income. (Edinburgh needs cash.)

There will be arguments about the value/point of the green belt - especially there (airport, motorways, Highland Showground etc.)

Technically RBS was brownfield because it was on the site of Gogarburn Hospital.

RBS also 'threatened' to take its World HQ elsewhere. (Hindsight is a wonderful thing...)

Any development in the area MUST take walking and cycling seriously - not just because 'we' say so, but to show that Edinburgh is thinking/acting World Class/leading.

    BUT...

I'm sure it's entirely about that. Murray Estates own a lot of the "farm" land around there and seem to have spent a lot of time and effort in the last few years attempting to make it much more valuable by pushing the de-Greenbelt agenda. "Garden District Charette" anyone? (there's a thread somewhere about that)

Well they were already in a strop because they were blocked from developing behind St Andrew Square on site of New [old] St Andrew House. I think Fred had designs on something to "balance" out the Castle.
