WITH its boarded-up skyscrapers in once-prosperous neighbourhoods, and crumbling factories replacing its once-thriving industry, Detroit is the most famous example of a "shrinking city".

But a conference will be told this week that Glasgow and Dundee are among other cities around the world that risk a similar fate.

Maybe Glasgow and Dundee should learn from Detroit and use the same tool for urban regeneration that Detroit has now started using, it is called the bicycle...

We venture up to Dundee semi regularly, see lots of cyclists there at morning commute time cycling along the river path. Can't comment on whether it's in decline or not, don't know it well enough, but there does seem to be lots of regeneration work going on.

Also a nice wee bike shop, Nicholsons, bought a bike there the other week.

Nicholsons has been there for a long time. Gordon Christie whose corner toy shop in St Andrews was our local bike shop (albeit nine miles away) used to moan about Nicholsons discount bike pricing. My little brother used to go there for bits for his Sun racer.

peem Brewster also not huge fan of Nicholson's but he had the other shop in Dundee.

my friend Jim took part in their 50 year celebration. he was given a special jersey commemorating the half centenary. As with other regular customers he was asked to travel as far as possible and post picture of himself in the jersey in foreign parts. someone made it to South America

Jim's was next to the South Lanarkshire sign before Woolfords where the Thriving on Safe driving has been sprayed over
