I fitted some SKS raceblade mudguards to my road bike today. The instructions required me to remove those small springs on the q/r quills (the guard stays locate onto the quill rather than the accessory eyelets). I have it in the back of my head that these springs are required for safety reasons... does anyone think/know that their removal is unsafe?

Safety reasons possibly being that a loose QR will only look loose on brief inspection when it still has springs to push the ends out?

I bent one ages ago and removed it, rode like that for months.

Mr Knees, they're just there to help you centre your wheel more easily, as they're both pushing the wheel inwards from either side. Try putting both on one side like I did the other week and you'll see what I mean - could barely get the wheel on never mind centred. They don't make any difference to how securely your wheel is attached to yr bike.

Thanks all. I'll ride with greater confidence (and drier bahookie) on my newly adorned roadie...
