I suspect the 'non-slip' surface has made things worse by not letting the timbers dry out.

The 'boards' aren't even covering all the holes, so looks like a completely new deck will be required - so bridge likely to be shut for a while.

Hope it gets replaced with something long lasting and rideable in all weathers.

I miss the old rumbling bridge.

They replaced one of the old wooden bridges in Braidburn Valley a year or two ago with a big steel one. It actually looked quite nice when it was still painted in pastel yellow primer but then they painted it black.

The holes are pretty bad, the platform is rotting away. Probably right about the non-slip surface. When they do eventually replace the deck I hope the bridge won't have to close for long, this is a key access point to the NEPN.

Thank you for your enquiry of 6 January about the bridge from Powderhall to St Mark’s Park.

Since the new bridge was constructed in 2008/9 there has been problems with failure of the specified anti skid surfacing boards. Many have been replaced but problems remain. The poor performance of these boards is not acceptable from a safety point of view and also attracts high maintenance costs. It is therefore proposed to remove the boards and apply a liquid based anti skid surfacing. I anticipate that this more traditional form of surfacing will give a minimum of 10 years service before requiring replacement. In the short term, temporary boards have been put in place to minimise the risks to users.

Funding for this work has been sourced and my staff are currently preparing to issue tender documents to relevant Contractors. It is anticipated that work will be carried out mid February, weather permitting. The bridge will remain open to users during the works.

Good news - especially the last sentence.

"problems with failure of the specified anti skid surfacing boards" - wonder if they can get a refund!

The boards are just (marine) ply with a surface treatment... Bit like a shed roof, but with a lot more traffic.
