  1. Sigh

"In a recent report, the Commons Transport Committee said it was "hard to justify parking fines that are substantially more than the fines for more serious offences like speeding", for which the minimum penalty is £100 and three penalty points added to the offender's licence."

"This would be "an initial step to giving local authorities the scope to allow lower charges (than £70 in London and £40 in the rest of England) for minor parking variations", such as overstaying in car parks or on-street bays."

In what world are fines of £70 and £40 substantially more than £100 and 3 penalty points?

The previous paragraph - Fixed-penalty charges currently range from £70 to £130 in London and from £40 to £70 elsewhere.

So the £130 charges are substantially more than £100 and presumably that's what they find hard to justify.

  3. Yes, but the £100 is mentioned as being a 'minumum' as well. The £130 is only if you don't pay your fine in 2 weeks, so the comparison with the 'minimums' for parking is probably fair, while the £130 and £70 charges for not paying quickly could be compared with higher speeding fines.

    Maybe.

Still doesn't make sense if you ask me to come out with a statement like that, even if we look at £130. If that's really all that they mean then drop that particular fine in London and leave the rest alone.

Solution: increase the fine for more serious offences to a level that reflects their serious nature.

We'd expect parking fines to be (potentially) higher than speeding fines I think?

There's no insurance cost or driving licence penalty attached to parking fines as there is to prosecutions for speeding.

Neither is there any social stigma at all associated with getting a parking ticket, unlike a potential ban for speeding.

These things make a parking ticket less of a deterrent than it otherwise might be. If it's only pocket change, why not just park illegally and pay the odd fine?

I'm pretty liberal with parking and have had one ticket in the last decade, works out to roughly 5p per week surcharge - not much of a deterrent.

Does this have any effect on Scotland or is fixed penaly level setting a reserved matter?

What was that about wanting more of Westminster, Dave? ;-)
