Harley-Davidson rider injured when he was 'shunted off bike by angry bus driver' is sent a HIGH-VIS JACKET by transport firm

"A biker who claimed he was shunted off his Harley-Davidson by an angry bus driver was sent a high-visibility jacket by the transport company, it emerged today.

Pub landlord and father-of-one Gerry McLoughlin, 47, of Bristol, said he was knocked off his motorbike after an altercation with the First bus driver who had sounded his horn at him.

But when he complained the firm sent him the jacket and information aimed at helping bus drivers and cyclists understand the obstacles they both face."

The article then goes on to say that sending the hi-viz was an error as they send them out to cyclists who get in contact and the incident was marked down as "bike" rather than "motorbike".

Now, I'm not one who subscribe to the "victim-blaming" angle as much as some people here but even I have mixed feelings about a bus company sending out hi-viz as a response. If they do it as part of the campaign as they say, fair enough. But if they do it as a follow-up to a complaint, it could very well be taken the wrong way, as here.

I don't have mixed feelings. If they sent one to me after one of their drivers had tried to kill me I would sh** in it and send it back. }:-(

I doubt I'd adopt Min's technique, lol, but agree wholeheartedly. As either a motorbiker or a cyclist I would find that response absolutely grossly offensive, hard to believe any sane person could consider it a reasonable thing to do.

Yes, I can't even begin to think of what they might have been thinking.

Lol, stop making me laugh when I'm trying to be ragin'!

I fail to see how "I would shop in it and send it back." would have any effect on them ;-)

Imagine if organisations started sending rape victims long skirts... or black people "pretend white man" masks.

If your driver isn't behaving criminally, there's no issue, innit?

  10. In fairness a rape victim is unlikely to be raped by someone in their capacity as a representative of an organisation that they then complain to rather than, well, going to the police.

The comparison with racism, Dave, I have to say is one you mention a lot and I think is crass in the extreme, and I really wish you'd drop it as I personally don't think it's a comparison that serves anyone well.

Yes people dislike me because I'm on a bike, and there's a certain attitude that we are 'asking for it',m but I don't think I would ever equate that with the hatred, anger, violence and discrimination shown to non-whites by certain areas of society.

All of that said, sending out hi-viz to people in this situation is just mind-boggling.

Oh you haven't seen me shopping. You know the scenes you see on the news in the US when Apple release a new iPhone? That's nothing..

With respect I think it's almost exactly the same. The key differentiator is that you are born of a certain race and can't change it, whereas people can and do give up cycling.

I'm offered casual violence in the street by strangers on a regular basis, due to my mode of transport, and twice been involved with the police after serious incidents - they weren't even slightly interested, again due to my mode of transport. (I'm basing this on comparable interactions when cycling wasn't involved)

Even when the police do proceed, prosecutions often don't seem to happen at all, when they do juries often acquit even the most bare-faced offenders, and when they are forced to hand down a sentence, the judiciary often seem to apply a generous discount for the victim's status as a cyclist.

Go to any of the newspaper comments and swap "cyclists" for catholics and you've got plenty of people who'd be hauled up on sectarian hate grounds. Even public figures get in on the act.

Can you imagine Parris advocating (even in jest) that immigrants or whoever is the hate-group of the day should be garrotted?

Perhaps wishfully convincing ourselves that it's not as bad as other forms of prejudice is one of the reasons why it is as bad as it is?

  13. We're going to have to agree to disagree on this one Dave.

    @ Min

In that case shop away if you ever get sent a thoughtless hi-viz!

Just warn me in advance of where you're shopping so I can keep my distance! ;-)
