So, I normally take my bikes to bike works. If they're busy, they tell me that. If I've got some big work that needs done, I'll check with them before taking it in. I then leave bike with them, and we agree a time when I'll collect and they say 'we'll give you a call if we find anything beyond what we've agreed'. Ie if a part needs replacing etc. can't think of a time they've actually done that though. And then I go and collect and the bike has inevitably been ready for ages.

Today, though, I took my bike to a different shop because bike works didn't have the part in that I needed. The shop seemed quiet. No issues mentioned. We discussed when I needed it by, I left them my phone numbers and went to work.

Came back this evening, encountered to a school pickup, and guy was only then working on the bike, and it wouldn't be ready for 45 min - after they closed.

Should I have rung up to check the bike was ready?

Everything was very polite and I'm sure the work will be well done, when I go back in.

But I've never encountered this before, so wondering if I miscalled it?

Hard to say. Might have had a number of bikes queued. Staff ill etc. same day return normal if booked well in advance. Sometimes you do have to hang around at end of day?

Dunno gembo. No explanation or apology given. Just 'it's not ready'. Made me think I should have rung? But when? I needed enough warning to rearrange child collections.

Hard to say. You shouldn't expect them to call you back to let you know it's ready, even if they've said they will.

My rule of thumb is to give them a call about lunchtime if it's a same day service, and if it was pre-arranged to be two or more days I'd call about lunchtime on the due day.

Sounds like I've been well and truly spoiled by the good folks at Bikeworks then. Glad I gave them a wee christmas gift on my last visit.

Will be more astute next time I take he bike elsewhere.

Six months to replace a hinge once. Evans took three months I think.

Next time I'll try Bike Trax.

I only use bike works, pretty much for these reasons - I like their style, stuff is ready when they say, and - like you, if its a big job, get a call if it looks "iffy".

    Not spoiled, just great service.
