Although rightly maligned by Copenhagenize.com for their "cycling is dangerous" messaging, Volvo have launched a program to make it impossible to KSI anyone with one of their cars by 2020

Unsurprisingly the approach is to basically take drivers out of the loop beyond "I want to go over there".

    More details here.

So will you feel safer surrounded by robo-cars ?

"By 2020, nobody shall be seriously injured or killed in a new Volvo."

Think it's about 4th last word.

Yes - I though that was odd too but further reading starts talking about "vulnerable road users" and the article talks about road sign reading, pedestrian detection etc so it does sound like they are taking a more preventative approach rather than the steel cage with airbags stuff they are known for.

In theory the cars would not actually be capable of passing you too close or too fast....

So will you feel safer surrounded by robo-cars ? Only if they have they wheels permanently clamped.

Presumably their PR folks have told them never to say 'killed by a car'. far too negative.

But only if you are a pedestrian. It has been specifically designed to look only for pedestrians and to ignore anything that is "something else".

And besides, who is going to buy this car any way? Drivers who are already concerned about the safety of others and who drive carefully anyway?

I think Paul Merton did that one on HIGNFY years ago. He wanted to know if there was a Flippant Fraud Office.
