Olympic cycling champion Sir Chris Hoy wrecked his £80,000 Jaguar in a crash, it has emerged.

The 34-year-old smashed up his new XKR sports car as he turned right into a main road and collided with a Vauxhall Vectra.

No one was injured in the crash, police said.

A witness told The Sun: "He was turning right. He must have looked left, seen it was clear and thought it was clear on the right.

"The car coming down the road basically clattered into him at right angles."

The witness said Sir Chris's car was left in the middle of the road amid debris.

The crash happened on Thursday evening near the National Cycling Centre in Manchester.

Sir Chris won three Olympic titles in Beijing two years ago, making him the most successful male Olympic cyclist of all time, which earned him the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award and a knighthood.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: "At 5.51pm on Thursday August 5 2010, police were called to Ashton New Road near to the City of Manchester stadium to reports of a two vehicle collision involving a Jaguar and a Vauxhall Vectra.

"Drivers exchanged details and no injuries were reported."

    BBC gives a different story,

"Chris was slowly edging forwards to turn right into a main road when the front of his car was hit from the right by a car that had overtaken the queue of stationary traffic by driving on the chevron area.

"The driver of the other car apologised to Chris and admitted it was his fault."
