Development with plenty of bike capacity

Out today and came across the new halls at Sugarhouse Close. This student accommodation development for Edinburgh University has resisted temptation to allow cars in. Old town location is ideal for walking and of course bikes.

Racks are covered but of hanging type. I counted two bikes but they could hold around 200 I reckon. Steps have a ramp continental style.

I noticed the ramps a few ago, but not the racks - very new(?)

    Impressive!

Yes you're right. Architect info here. Cockburn Society inputed! Only thing I suppose is security of bikes outside?

The racks running the length of the building in the photo posted look new to me there are other hanging racks within the development that went in earlier.

Spokes commented on this planning application as it unfortunately has a massive flaw - it is not secure - particularly for overnight storage, as it is open to the public. This could explain why there are so few bikes there in the picture.

It is not the only example which the planners have allowed like this, and it contravenes their own parking standards. More info in the new Spring Spokes Bulletin.

"and it contravenes their own parking standards"

    Indeed!

What was I saying about joined-up CEC planning/implementation policies on another thread...

Presume it would be possible to put a gate on(?)

I imagine there is CCTV - not an excuse.

Indeed I am aware of the racks as I often wander through the various old town closes of a lunchtime and whilst sugar house is not my favourite it is en route to the poetry library which is a lovely building though about to be closed for renovations. It would need many gates, though of course you may mean gates for the bike racks? That should be doable? There must be ways of student proofing keys and gates into and out of an enclosure?

There's a locked and covered enclosure with key-pad entry near the Potterow building, so it's do-able.

Doubtless it can be done technically, some way or the other, but that is not the problem!

The problem is that if the development was given permission without the requirement for bike parking to be secure and well-managed (which I think was the case) then the council now has no lever to ensure that it happens. All that can now be done is for someone (who?) to try to persuade whoever owns the property that they need to do something.

There are so many examples of lack of joined-up thinking between transport and planning at both government and council level that we've done a major feature on this in the new Spokes Bulletin.
