"A LARGE swathe of Edinburgh’s Royal Mile would be closed to traffic and turned into an arts hub under plans to help revive the fortunes of the famous thoroughfare."

"Under a roads shake-up currently being explored, most traffic would be diverted away from the area between Blackfriars Street and St Mary’s Street, following a successful pilot in the High Street, further up the Royal Mile. These plans have been backed in principle by the city council."

A ten-year blueprint for the middle section of the street around the historic Netherbow will see it promoted as the home of traditional culture and the heart of the city’s literary quarter. Historic buildings and closes would be restored, new works of art would be commissioned, and special events and festivals would be staged.

Tourism bodies and walking tour groups will be encouraged to throw their weight behind the area, which is little known as the birthplace of publishing in Scotland.

Edinburgh is a city built on the production of books. Until the mid-1960s, Edinburgh was the major centre outside London for printing and publishing in the UK. Edinburgh was as well known for the three B’s of ‘Beer, Biscuits and Books’ as Dundee was for the three J’s of ‘Jute, Jam and Journalism’.

    Sounds good.

Hm, I wonder where they will re-route the 35 bus then?

    Beer, Biscuits and Books’

the Beer could be replaced with Bull***t, given that the Parliament is built on the site of two old Breweries and within hot-air distance of at least 8 more.

A large swathe of huge royal mile between blackfriars street and st Mary's st?

Those roads run parallel to each other with no other roads in between so are an extension of the already pedestrianised section by one block.

Creeping pedestrianisation might be the way to do it, the lawnmarket feels quite pedestrianised at times but then again, some big old lorries.

@gembo That was my initial thought on this. I guess the bit between the Bridges and Blackfriars Street will be left non-pedestrianised to allow for taxis to turn and wait at the Scandic Crown taxi rank? Unless Blackfriars Street is more heavily used by motorvehicles than I am aware? I suppose it could be by service vehicles for the hotel?

Loads of buses seem to want to emerge from Blackfriars Street in the morning, presumably ferrying tourists off somewhere more exciting than their hotel. Lots of taxis and PHCs enter it at the Cowgate end. No. 35 presumably punted down Jeffrey then up Market, thence back towards the end of Chambers St to pick up the old route? It could turn the 35 into a Waverley-servicing service as well as a non-express airport option.
