Every single road work in Scotland should be logged on the Road Works Register, which can be accessed at:

    http://www.roadworksscotland.org/default.aspx

There is no excuse for "losing" previous road works.

There is lots of guidance on road reinstatements, which is very, very dull. In essence, all road openings must be reinstated to the standards set by the local authority - which can include half and full carriageway resurfacing in certain circumstances. The authority can inspect any reinstanement and require remedial action to be taken if it doesn't meet the required standards.

Failure to comply with these requirements can lead to a penalty being imposed (although these are puny).

As I see it, the problems are:

    1. Local authorities don't have the man-power to undertake enough inspections.
    2. Penalties for non-compliance are smaller than the cost of decent reinstatments.
    3. There is no reputational damage to the companies responsible for poor quality re-instatements.
    4. The Scottish Road Works Commissioner has no powers to speak of.

    Useful link!

I see there are THREE sets of work currently listed for Trinity Crescent - which might make it clear why it's not clear what is going on!

A minor(?) issue is that it doesn't list the contractors.

Obviously responsibility rests with CEC, SW or whoever but assembling data on contractors who don't do a good job might be helpful!

Warrender Park Road recently closed at the top of Marchmont Street to allow them to do pipes by the new school entrance. Reinstatement of the setts afterwards was a joke - they sank about 12 inches within a week. Small patch re-done, now it's like a rollercoaster and has setts poking out at odd angles. Nearly had me off the bike this morning at only 5mph. Don't know who to complain to though.

"Don't know who to complain to though."

    Start with Clarence.

Talking of red surfacing and white lines -

It's a long time since there was any trace of white paint here (apart from the faint cycle symbol).

It's 'simple' stuff like this that makes people question CEC's 'comomitment to cycling'.

How difficult can it be to set up a system that knows what infrastructure the council has and a related system for inspecting it??

This cycle lane should be important. It's an unusually long one (for a lead-in), on a narrow road that gets busy in the morning 'rush' hour.

It's actually surprising the number of drivers who notice the lane and stay out of it.

A bit of paint will certainly be cheaper than sorting the drain in the ASL box or the awful surface across the junction - but they need doing too.

    History.

Dangerous pot hole on Ferry Road opposite Silverknowes Neuk fixed within 3 weeks of appearing. Nice work, CEC!

Are you saying 'it should have been quicker' or they've done a good job?

Slightly OT, but close enough. Kudos goes to Dave who, this morning, I discovered not for the first time performing a repair on the NEPN. Last time it was by using a dustpan and brush to clear an apparent proliferation of glass, this time it was with a screwdriver and jubilee clip. He was busy re-attaching a somewhat dangerously overhanging fence under a bridge slightly east from Fiveways.

    Chapeau!

So I've lived in hope for a year now that the resurfacing on Craighouse Road would be finished properly. Those with long memories will recall chdot and me having a rivetting discussion last year about how they were going to fix this bit of the work, which they had clearly not done as per spec (judging by the "3/10 see me" type spray markings on the road) and put back the missing red chips across this junction and the next one up the hill.

We now have what looks like an answer. In the last day or two the half-finished cycle lane halfway up the steep hill has had the word "End" painted onto it. This presumably means that someone has decided not to bother fixing the red chips across two junctions that weren't done right and is now tiptoe-ing quietly away hoping that nobody has noticed.

Does anyone happen to have, or to know where I can find, the plan that showed the original spec for the work? I remember seeing one online last year, but don't know where to look for it now.

It does seem a bit of a shame that the work can be left apparently unfinished...

Even more of a shame it was not seen fit to move the cycle lane inside the parking (or abolish the parking and segregate the cycle lane) - parking which is 90% empty, there being no houses on that stretch of the road.
