We had torrential rain overnight once when I had my 54 mile mega commute. My parents insisted on my taking the car even though I tried to tell them it would be better for me to cycle. Most terrifying journey I have ever made as the car threatened to flood and break down while mowing through deep water leaving me stranded in the middle of nowhere. And I didn't have a mobile phone then either.

I usually avoid heavy rain but one evening, cycling home from work, I saw a really dark almost black cloud ahead of me. I was on the cycle path behind Fountainbridge breweries. By the time I reached the bridge over lanark road, the heavens opened. I waited some minutes under a bridge and then thought, what the heck, other cyclists were carrying on with no waterproofs or other rain gear.

(I had none with me either as the forecast was SUPPOSED to be sunny!) So I continued on and got totally drenched. The rain wasn't cold and it got quite pleasant really after the initial soaking. Stripped naked at the house and ran upstairs for a shower as I was totally mud-splattered.

Once you get soaked, and accept you're soaked and you're not going to get any drier (and also, any wetter!) I quite like a ride home in the rain during summertime - so long as you know there's a kettle, a hot shower and dry towel waiting at the other end. Not nearly so much fun turning up at work after one though, as you know you've got to put damp, smelly, cold kit back on in 8 hours time.

I can remember making the bus instead of cycling because it was raining and then regretting it...
