Sorry to continue to be boring by mainly reposting from the Grauniad, but anyway, saw this and thought of various discussions we've had in the past.

This article http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/standard/article-23866291-i-cycle-therefore-men-must-pinch-my-bottom.do was posted on the CTC forum, where it was swiftly followed by a few men stating that women would be flattered if the men doing the harassing were attractive. *rolls eyes*

So male drivers in London ARE specifically aggressive towards female cyclists?

I was shouted at on Curriehill Road by a woman driving a van, she shouted - Can you not cycle any faster than that? As I knew the cheeky personage this was construed as a joke but the stuff on 101Wangers website is shocking. Is this the experience of women cyclists in Edinburgh? I am ashamed to be a man at times.

It's not generally my experience. I've had abuse when I've been on the bike but it's been abuse based on me being a cyclist rather than me being a woman. On the other hand, I wonder if the same people would have said the same things to male cyclists, or if they just feel it's ok to abuse women.

Occasionally but nothing like the extent to which it is happening to these women. Horrible. I am amazed they keep going.

A guy in a black Mercedes-Benz did try to chat me up once in Knightsbridge, near Harvey Nicks.
When he found out I was a guy with waist length hair he changed his tune or maybe he just didn't fancy me.

What's wrong with being sexy?....
Posted 14 years ago # -
Nothing. But there's a lot wrong with assuming just because someone is sexy it's okay to make gratuitous sexual references to them...

Next time someone gives you a mouthful ask them that very questionPosted 14 years ago # -
Well, I've had wolf whistles from road diggers when I was lycra'd up on a weekend morning training ride. I was a little surprised, being a 6ft, 80kg bloke and very rarely mistaken for a lady.
However, I suspect they were simply taking the piss out of my unconventional attire, the fat b******s.
Or maybe there's a strong diversity programme in road digger recruitment? Perhaps I should be flattered?

PS - no doubt like the BBC having to give equal time to Lab/Con/Lib parties in the election the builders etc have been allowed to continue to wolf whistle (telling them not to would be akin to telling a leopard to change its spots) as long as they give equal time to male passers by too...
