After a ride this morning I cleaned and check over my bike and found a cut in the tyre. It is about 5mm long and about 4mm deep. As yet the tyre/tube are still inflated.

The tyre is a Conti Ultra sport which would appear from what their website says to be lacking in any puncture protection layers.

Am I asking for trouble if I continue to run it or should I replace it with something better?

    Hardly used too!

I'd put some superglue in, let the tube down and blow it up tomorrow.

It's worth a try. Glue applied. We'll see what tomorrow brings.

Superglue is not waterproof. You cpuld try vulanised rubber from your puncture kit?

If you have an old worn tyre kicking around, cut a rectangular section from it around an inch long, half an inch wide. Use it as a 'tyre boot': tape it with masking or duct tape to the inside of the tyre where the cut is. Press the tape down firmly to smooth the edges. Pop tyre on wheel, inflate tube, ride. The boot should stop your tube from expanding into the weak spot created by the cut, and a potential explosive blowout...

Tractor Factory swears by Shoe Goo for that sort of job so I'd fill the hole with that (since I have some, but DaveC's suggestion is also a good one) and then use crowrivers' boot for good measure.

I think the Conti Ultra Sport are the cheapest road tyres Conti sell? They usually come with new road bikes. I use Grand Prix 4000s but one of the Ultra tyres worked well on the front of my commuter last summer.

Be aware that exploding tyres are loud. As in 'is the flat falling down' loud.

Just as advance warning should the worst happen!

Had that happen to me on Grove St years ago. The rear tyre's sidewall had developed a cut and the tube had been expanding through it as I rode, unbeknown to me. I soon knew about it when it sounded like the One O'Clock gun had been fired from the back of my bike!

After some shoddy inflation efforts on my part I had a seemingly spontaneous blow out after I'd put the bike away. We were living in Montreal at the time and my girlfriend hit the deck thinking it was a gunshot.

[There has been a organised crime related drive-by a few days earlier in an adjoining neighbourhood. Actually it was at Parc Extension which is nowhere near Westmount but I digress].

I run Conti Ultra Sports, not had any problems with them. But since my incident with the bus last year I've hardly been out on the bike.

Just to close this off, when I reinflated the tyre the hole pulled open again. I took the tyre off and the hole goes right through although there was no mark on the tube.

I've ordered some 4000S's to replace it and it's partner.
