Guys, In a fit of GAS I bought a zipped roll a few weeks back. The plan was to leave the nelson at home for short rides and stuff my jacket, tools and phone back there.

I occurred to me though that if I put my tools in the same small bag as my phone without a jacket to dampen them I'll probably not have a phone at the end.

I have an idea to modify an internal pocket on the bag and put my phone in a padded case, any other ideas? Will sewing through the side of bag effect the waterproofing?

Wrap the tools in something? Put the phone in a bubble wrap sleeve?

My saddlebag is usually so full that nowt much gets a chance to rattle around in there.

I thought about a tool roll, it'll probably help but not completely. If the phone ended up under a big density of tools I can't image it'll end well.

tools = filthy. get a flap or something sewn in to stop your clothes sitting againt them.

Install your spare inner tubes in such a way that they cushion the tools. I found lumps of metal like a box spanner and a small wrench for the tracknuts did a great job at wearing away the thick canvas of my toolroll where the corners met.

Can you get a neoprene cover? This will protect it. Without pictures of the roll, I can't tell what you have. Is it a bag where everything sits in loosely or a traditional tool roll where tools sit in their own compartment?

Edit, seen it now, a mate has one and I made a copy of one for my own use. As I say above try gogling neoprene covers for your phone.

Good idea Kaputnik, I'll get a tool roll and put some elastic in to hold it on one side and some on the other for my phone.

DaveC its this type of bag.

It's a nice wee bag which can stay on a folded Brompton. Who made yours?

Sue I think. I'm trying to rig a way of keeping it on with the Nelson in the QR bracket.

Speaking of tool rolls, can anyone recommend a decent one that buckles under a saddle? I am heartily sick of the velcro-lycra interface that inevitably occurs when using most modern saddle bags.

I have one off of Etsy from a company called "Moffa" but not sure they exist anymore. It's good as a tool roll, although the buckling arrangements werent great and I end up tying it on with lots of extra webbing.

@DaveC That would be awesome, if you don't mind. What sort of size is your roll? It looks like an epic audax one. I suspect I could get away with one a wee bit smaller if it had room for a couple of tubes, multi tool, tyre levers, and a couple of random pockets for patches/ emergency LED lights/chain links.

I'll see what I can run up with the piece I have left. You POPing Saturday?

I have fpund the offcut. Its a bit small but should be big enoght for a couple of road tubes and the other stuff you mentioned. I'll see if I can add a press stud pocket for loose stuff like glue and patches.
