That's the next section that has just got £125,000 from the Sustrans Community Link funding.

This is what it's like now (a previous 'cycle-friendly' attempt).

    There's already some signage!

I hope they reduce the radius of the junction to John's Place. Even better if they remove the whole eastern side of the junction. It's like Montecarlo GP out there.

Work starting on the Leith Links section now - half of the westernmost chicane has gone, with a trench dug beside St Mary's wall and a couple of the tactiles removed. There's a curving blue line painted on the grass behind where the recycling bins are where the path will swing out, though I thought the path was going to widen a bit earlier on so that there's no need for the chicanes.

So far, all the tactiles are aligned consistently with those already in place outside St Mary's...

Let's hope it's corrected more quickly than the Harrison Park equivalent.

You mean they've taken away the chicanes at the school but not created a 'deviation' path??

Nope. Widened it slightly, keeping the ostensible cycle side furthest from the school. Longitudinal tactiles are maintained on the side furthest from the school on the new spur all the way to the undropped kerb, resulting in a distinct possibility of tramlining in the wet, where the tactiles are on a bend.

    Er, watched again.

    See no barriers or "spur".

    Obviously missing something.

    Will have to go!

The spur is the new bit. Path used to join up to Links Place the other side of where the recycling bins were.

@winpig re the lack of dropped kerbs - they're working on the Links Place crossing this morning, cutting and lifting substantial amounts of tarmac from the road on the west side. This is probably just be them building out the pavement on that side as per the plan, but the might be sorting it all out.

If it wasn't Crummock doing the work I'd be less worried, but they don't have a good record of getting things right first time.

A presumption of incompetence does seem fair given their track record.

    CrummockWatch UK Update:

They've built out the pavement on the west side but with a full height kerb same as the east side. Does look like a complete cock-up.

There's nothing on the council's impending road closure/disruption map for that bit, which you think there would be seeing as the road between the build-outs is almost certainly too narrow to get cars and buses through whilst strips of it are levelled-up, though temporarily sending the #12 along John's/Duncan Place will be easier now that Great Junction/Constitution has re-opened.

There are temporary traffic lights to allow for just a single lane through the Links Place crossing at the moment so they must be up to something.

They appear to have decided on a compromise and raised the road surface about half way up to the kerb height. This still leaves enough of a kerb to cause problems for some cyclists, buggies, wheel chair users and maybe even peds.

I can understand the need for a gentle/low hump, or even no hump, on a road used by buses but whatever they do with the road I can't understand why the path and road surface can't be designed/installed to the same height. Not sure if it's the council or Crummock, but someone has cocked up here.

Tarmac now being raised to kerb level. Crummock and/or Council vindicated.

Crivens to Betsy. They're running out of opportunities to mess something up. I'll have to check the progress of the bit alongside the tennis courts and community croft.

Nothing noticeably catastrophic so far. Hopefully the soft-looking mud next to the bike side will be seeded to help firm it up more quickly, in case escape/diversion thereupon is required. Presumably the surface next to the tactiles at Links Gardens will be freshened at some point, rather than left as crumbly cement. The widening of the path opposite the new level toucan also sensibly starts well before the crossing.

Possible weak point - the corner where the very wide path from the park turns onto the widened shared footway has been put back (fresh mortar on the kerbstones) where it was, leaving what could turn out to be a narrow pinchpoint:

I've used it to get children to allotments a few times. I filmed but haven't yet posted the convolution required to get from the John's Place crossing to the WoL with the least amount of on-road, cobble or dismount.

The tactiles on the new curvy path as you leave St Mary's are pretty awful. They're at about a 30 degree angle to the path, and right on a bend.

And the tactiles right at the start of the new path across the Links are bad too. They're right in the middle of where you turn.

I've noticed that folk cycle on the pedestrian side at both places...

Other than the badly placed tactiles, it's a good addition. But it doesn't join up with WoL yet...

    Crummock Watch Update

They're currently re-laying a block of tactiles adjacent to the bend on Links Garden Lane, no idea why. Maybe installing a turnstile.

They've also laid an area (an isosceles trapezium with its base along the path) of 'stuff' (no idea what you call it, hexagonal matting just below the surface through which grass will grow) outside the easternmost gate. Doesn't look like they've done anything at the other gate yet.

Obviously, logistical considerations dictate waiting 'til the week the schools go back to do some work outside of a school, rather than attempt this during the prior six weeks of school holiday when there would have been no crowds of kids/parents twice a day.

There's any number of brand names for it, but I believe the common or garden name is "grass reinforcement mesh".

Maybe they're installing a small tarmac area for the recycling bins to sit on, which would at least make it easier to hoick them off the path every time I pass.

A large Crummock van with a Crummock tarmac-bothering machine was parked right across the enlarged entrance to the path from Links Gardens Lane, with the path itself blocked by orange plastic fencing with a man behind it chipping out a tactile. Further heavy plant was being manoeuvred into Links Gardens Lane, meaning you had to bump up an undropped kerb back onto the new path after squeezing around the back of the large van. I asked them if they could perhaps not block the alternative route on/off the path if they were working on the path itself as I went past.

This was going on outside my flat and I'm still none the wiser about what they were actually doing apart from relaying some tactiles at slightly different angle.

Yup, they've moved the tactiles that were placed RIGHT in the middle of a curve, to slightly to one end of the curve.

So, still dangerous in the wet, and largely unusable...
